Today I am learning about Orace Johnson, who died of a heart attack while contra dancing, after which his wife commissioned a bumper sticker to put on his coffin which said "I'D RATHER BE DANCING". Absolute legend, may we all be so lucky
Because I can’t be normal I was activity spinning on the dance floor at a contra dance tonight thinking about how different Star Wars characters would feel about contra dancing…

We recently moved and joined the local contra dance community. Hubby and I met contra dancing and I started when I was about 12. For a while I was a dance gypsy. Then I got married and had kids.
Anyway. I LOVE my new dance community. So does my husband. The community has been dancing to recordings since Covid and is rebuilding. Hubby will be joining/con testing a dance band with a pianist we met there.
What I like about this community is… everyone is having LOTS of fun. It’s a small group. Lots of new comers each time. But people are laughing lots during the dances. No one is taking it seriously. IYKYK
Also, there are more women than men so lots of women dance together and it’s so normalized that it doesn’t matter. And it’s part of what makes it fun.
Also, it turns out I like leading!!! I really enjoy it. After decades of following, turns out I like leading. Also it’s fun and funny. We did one with Gypsy meltdown and one of the old ladies went full on it. Forehead to forehead. We were laughing so hard when we finally melted down. E also danced a circle dance where the ladies/followers had to tap on the shoulder of the men/leaders in front of them. It was so flirty and because many dancers were female, just really super fun. There was a little boy dancing a following part and every time he tapped me it was just joyous.
Pacing? This is just the right pace for me. It’s physical by competitor so perfect.
And… it’s only a 10 min drive from our house. I was finding it hard to go to my old community because of the drive time involved. Now, it’s just all dance and no driving.
Happiness is a happy contra dance community.
