When grew up and attempted makeup culture as a teen, it was corrector stick, foundation, eyeliner, eyeshadow, maybe mascara. I rarely put on lipstick, usually a special event and or later on for cosplay. I never got into eyebrow lining or lip lining. And I wasn’t big into blush, because I normally had red cheeks anyway. And to me, that was a lot to have to buy, eventually I just did corrector, foundation and eyeliner, and then eventually I fucking stopped.

Now when I watch videos of people talking about some drama while doing make up, I am just floored at the amount of products, most of which I have no idea what it is. And then when it’s all done, they don’t even look like themselves. Maybe I’m showing my age but these makeup trends are fucking wild to me. And all I can think of is how much of their paycheck goes into making them not even look like themselves? I. Hate. It.

A significant portion of our history with contouring can be boiled down to a specific group: Performers.

Think those on stage, their faces painted so that the people in the last row can still perceive emotion and expression. A movie star made up to look more withered, more overweight, more tired or anxious or firm or skeletal. The cosplayer trying to look like a cartoon character. An opera singer alone on stage. Think a woman high on a trapeze, a man in drag on a bar stage.

And then think about all the girls spending their time after school trying to learn this same art.

Think how the world normalizes what once was utilized by a specific set of people. Airbrushed cheekbones in every advertisement, photo filters on every teenager's phone that erase baby fat and slim noses and plump the lips, tutorials on how to achieve the perfect look popping up on every social platform.

To create the impulse of looking in the mirror and seeing all the places to darken and hide, to whiten to highlight, to cover and conceal and tone and hue and shine - to teach yourself that your face is a daily project to paint, retouch, repair.
