Finnish soldiers at the defensive VT-line during the Soviet Vyborg-Petrozavodsk offensive in June 1944
A Finnish Guard at the Front Line with a Submachine Gun, Metsäpirtti, 17 January 1942
In December 1941, the front lines stabilized, and the war became a positional conflict in Metsäpirtti as well. Guard duty and patrolling continued relentlessly day and night in the cold, snowy forest, testing the men constantly. In some sectors, fierce clashes still took place. A single mistake could jeopardize the front line, making constant vigilance essential.
•••••••• [ sa-kuva | 70262 | M.Persson ]

shoutout to that one finnish dude with enough methed-up sisu to give god “alzheimer’s requiem” who went on a wild ride through the karelian wilderness for like a month during the continuation war

A Finnish soldier poses with a destroyed Soviet ISU-152, 1944.
Listen up freaks. I will only say this once. This is gonna be a long one so buckle tf up.
RUSSIA WILL NOT ATTACK FINLAND ANYTIME SOON.
Keep your eyes on Ukraine. They are still suffering every single fucking day. Trust me, we're FINE up north. We will be FINE. We are not scared. Of all the former states in emperial Russia, we are the only one who kept our independence after WW2.
I am not an expert, but I have read enough warhistory to have insight in the matter.
Is Russia building up their army by our border?
Answer: short answer, yes. Long answer: I dare say it's likely just a smoke screen. Russia wants to show power. And keeping the world scared is a good thing for them. The three-day war in Ukraine recently entered it's fourth year and show no signs of stopping anytime soon. So, scare in other ways, empty barrels and all that.
I would however be critical to what they try to evade us from seeing with this.
But they have boats destroying your underwater cables and planes in your airspace! The boats is a type of hybrid warfare, we know, working on it.
As for the planes. It literally happens so often that news no longer write that much about it anymore, and has been happening for as long as I remember. Stop making chickens out of feathers which may be from a different bird altogether.
Does Finland stand a chance in case of an invasion?
Answer: All I can say is that our military has almost 1 million men and women (and nonbinary) in reserve. We held back a stronger enemy with overwhelming odds against us and almost no help from outside because we were not expected to last last time around (shoutout to Norway and Sweden though!) . We never forgot 1939-1945 and that's been a tremendous aid.
Is the geology in Finland different from Ukraine? Yes. Ukraine has strengths in black mud and green forests, but weakness in big open areas. Finlands landborder with Russia consists mostly of thick, dense, deep forest for hundreds upon hundreds of kilometers westward, a few fields, villages and even some cities, then forests again. Our army is trained to fight in these areas, while the Russian army, as far as we know, only educate soldiers to warfare in these terrains in Alakurtti. And Alakurtti is far from the biggest garrison in Russia.
All fun and games until the snow starts humming in finnish and you get shot at from five different directions.
Do you see Finland as a war-theater in the next 5 years? No. Russia cannot bring Ukraine to their knees. They have no chance with us. They aren't that suicidal.
But they can still take Kyiv! It's only a matter of time! No. If they could, they would have in 2022. It didn't make sense to pull back from Kyiv if you knew you had a chance. They fucked up plain and simple (and thank god for that)
Are finnish people scared? Not by default no. We joined NATO in 2023 not because of fear, but because we're tired of them. Our president at the time, Sauli Niinistö, called Put*n the day we decided to apply for NATO-membership and told him to look at the mirror, it's YOUR OWN fault. And that pretty much sums us up as a people.
And now, onto questions which every single troll thinks they did something with. Jfc open a historybook.
Finland can't be trusted because we were aligned with bad mustache man. First of all, we were never "aligned", we used the help we got of weapons and such. BUT YOU DEPORTED JEWS! We didn't though, not on the scale you make it seem. We deported a batch of 26 people, of whom 8 happened to be jews. Once news broke about what happened to these men, the scandal was clear, and no more deportations of jews were made and A LOT of politicians resigned. Paavo Lipponen (former PM) has since apologized for this incident.
Once Germany was losing the war we fought an entire war against them (Lapland war). Finland was never on Germanys side, Finland was always on Finlands side. Did we de do everything right? No, we didn't. But we can only apologize and learn.
Ukrainians fought at the Battle of the Raatte Road! Why are you still helping those who sought to cut your country in two! Funny how you know that they sought to cut Finland in half to cut the escape-route north to Sweden and Norway off and essentially smoke us out, but don't know that Ukraine was a part of the USSR at this point.
Were the Soldiers Ukrainian? Yes.
Were they there willingly? Absolutely not. War is war and soldiers follow orders, if it was because of brain-washing or because of propaganda is debated. But this was after the Holomodor and Stalins cleansings and morale was low, easy to follow orders and you're both starving and the only one left of your family.
They were sent unprepared, in thin summer clothing with food only to last a few days, condoms and instruments because of a planned celebration in Oulu, in a huge column across the border in december 1939 (the coldest winter yet measured). Once Finland struck them into Mottis, it was over. They never had a chance once the first bomb destroyed the road.
A lot of soldiers deserted before reaching Finland. The thought of killing a brother-people was too much. The few who survived the nightmare in Suomussalmi were killed by their own that very spring.
Do we blame Ukraine? No. We know where the orders came from.
You lost the wars in 1939-1940 and 1941-1944! We consider it a bitter win. We had to give up 10% of our landarea and put 11% of our population onto the road to evacuate Petsamo and the Karelian Isthmus (Twice! Both after the winter war and the continuation war), which was about 400 000 people back in the 1940s.
We lost a lot of men, women lost husbands, mothers and fathers lost sons and around 55 000 children lost their own fathers. We lost a lot of land. A lot of people had to start their lives over in a new place.
But we kept our independence. And that's the price we, and the fallen soldiers payed.
Finland wants Karjala Takaisin! That means you want war with Russia! As I mentioned, the Karelian issue is a bitter pill and not completely swallowed. But we also know that it's beyond saving, Finlands economy won't handle that. We will support Karelias fight for independence, but we have to be realistic. It's not something we can do anymore, in the 1950s, or maybe even into the 1960s there was a chance to salvage what was left after the war. But not anymore.
So be critical and don't fall for all propaganda, it's not gonna get better. Focus on helping Ukraine, they are the ones fighting for their, and all our freedoms right now.
Don't think of us, we'll be fine. Don't paint the devil on the wall. And ffs don't share every sketchy news-source you see✌️
Slava Ukraini. Fuck Russia.
(Free Palestine and fuck Israel while we're at it.)
