“Gluten Free” 18”x18”, acrylic on canvas, 2026.
This is my first work of the year and another very significant one. Just last year in November I was diagnosed with Celiac disease. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder where my body will start to damage my small intestine and other body parts when exposed to gluten. It has been a very hard change for me as it’s rediscovering my relationship with food and what I eat and where I can eat as not being cross contaminated is vital. “Gluten free” colors come from all sorts of different foods that I will never be able to eat again, granted some of these do have gluten free alternatives I can definitely say they are not usually the same. From pasta, pizza, bread, hamburgers (due to the bun), hot dogs (also due to the bun), and even soy sauce all have gluten within them and are some of these colors featured on this piece. This was my own cathartic way of saying goodbye to my previous relationship with food that I took for granted but also recognization that celiac does not define me.
