The Patriotic Shrine at the Dickeyville Grotto was built in the late 1920s when Protestant Americans suspected that Catholics' allegiance to the Pope conflicted with their allegiance to the United States. Father Matthias Wernerus wanted to demonstrate that Catholics loved their country too.
This shrine features Christopher Columbus in the center with statues of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln on either end. There are two ‘bells’ celebrating the Declaration of Independence and the end of the Civil War. Other parts seem to be purely decorative.
As I said in my previous post about the Dickeyville Grotto, regardless of what you think of the subject matter, I have to admire the work of one man who spent five years realizing his creative vision. Almost 100 years later this site still draws around 50,000 visitors per year to this town of 1000 residents.
