Something I don't see many folks talking about with all that's going on in the US is the government's computer systems. I mean, yeah, we hear about that there's been data breaches, that doge-cultists have been plugging unsecured peripherals into computers, etc.
We haven't really been considering the wider implications of that. I know why, there's just too much to do and think about and that's a tomorrow problem. However, as a retired database and web developer who was responsible for environmental data flowing up to the EPA for the last half of her career, I can't stop thinking about it.
Even if every person who has participated and helped with this governmental destruction were kicked out tomorrow. Even if we could be sure we'd gotten rid of all of them, because of the actions of those cultists, because of their irresponsibility, their childishness, their greed, every single computer system in the government is now tainted. They can't be trusted. There isn't a single federal system we can ever rely on again because we have no idea what they might have installed for back doors or trojans or what have you so they could restore access after they were kicked out. And these systems are far too complicated to be absolutely certain we've found every nasty surprise they could have installed.
We can't even just, say, issue new SSNs to everyone (because that was a major system breach and who knows where in the fuck our data is right now?). Because somehow the SSNs have to be tied back to the old SSNs and benefits, etc. There has to be a match to the old data somehow.
But what all the above also means is that every one of those federal systems will have to be rebuilt from the ground up to make sure that they're actually clean. Systems that were old and clunky, but could never be rebuilt because of some vital function that couldn't be replicated within a reasonable time or reasonable budget. Systems that took millions of dollars to build in the first place 30 years (or more) ago.
The cost and complexity of all this looming work is daunting. Though there have been many times when I've tried to make one data system talk to another when I've thought "burn it all down and build them so they talk to each other from the get go". Maybe it won't be the clusterfuck I expect.
