AIO my dad complains about me
So I have been quite annoyed by the way my dad has been acting for the past few years. I don't know of I'm being dramatic but, I never ask him for anything. No gifts for my birthday, no Christmas presents, and when I was younger I asked for reasonable things.
But for the past 2 or 3 years, he has bought me super expensive stuff for Christmas and my birthday that I didn't ask for. I am very greatful for the things he bought, of course.
But this year, he called a few days before my birthday and told me that I wasn't gonna get anything from him anymore. The reason was that I'm too old, yes I agree, I'm 22. But the other reason was because I was expensive to give gifts to. That upsets me. And he keeps sending me reels on Instagram about dads saying that their daughters are expensive. He is the one buying me expensive shit I never asked for. It's not my fault he bought a sweater for 3000 SEK or body wash for 800 SEK.
I really don't get the reasoning there and it makes me upset. It feels like he conplains about me for things he does.
And he isn't a very good person anymore, so maybe I'm overreacting because I'm tired of him being a misogynistic shit ass.
Reddit consensus: NOT OVERREACTING (NOR) (100% confidence)
Top comment: “Not overreacting. Your dad is creating a classic strawman argument here. He is literally inventing a version of you that is "expensive and spoiled," funding it himself without your consent, and then punishing you for it.
He wants the ego boost of buying luxury gifts, but he also wants the victim points of being the "long-suffering father of an expensive daughter." It’s highly manipulative and deeply unfair. You didn't ask for a 3000 SEK sweater, he chose to buy it to feed his own narrative.”
Notable comment: “I think your feelings are justified, so NOR. It would be one thing if you asked for a bunch of luxury items and pouted if you didn't get what you wanted, but he decided to go expensive on his own. Calling you shortly before your birthday to say you're getting nothing feels off, especially when a Happy Birthday text day-of would be free and a simple card is cheap. The Instagram thing strikes me as passive aggressive, like he's trying to rub your face in your lack of a relationship.
That said, it also seems like the birthday thing isn't the only issue between you. You call him a misogynistic shit ass in your post, and labeling you "expensive" probably doesn't cause that. It might be healthiest to limit your contact with him if he's treating you that badly, regardless of the birthday thing.”
