Have you ever seen a pair of these birds on Glacier's lakes?
Known as the Common Loon (Gavia immer), they are growing increasingly rare. Although we have about 45 loons in the park, last year only 4 chicks were successfully raised. This time of year, the first chicks have started to hatch, and parents are on high alert -- so if you see loons around the park, be sure to enjoy from a distance!

Island Lake Reservoir—Part Two
Here is a recording of the common loon I mentioned in yesterday’s post. The quality is not great, what with me using my phone to record, but hopefully one gets the idea. Recording made on the night of July 16th 2017 at Island Lake Reservoir, north of Duluth, Minnesota.
