Distorters of revolutionary Marxism (of all kinds) will hate me for saying this. If you’re easily offended, keep scrolling, but someone has to say it.
You’re probably reading Lenin completely wrong.
This is what it looks like when a principled revolutionary Marxist reads the works of Lenin. Notice the blushing at Lenin’s clever humor and the way he pokes fun at his opponents. Notice the legs crossed, gently kicking back and forth in enjoyment at our great Vladimir Ilych’s proper application of materialist dialectics.
There's a tendency in IR discourse that I've noticed where the fact that many so-called “authoritarian regimes” curtail what is often labelled as the “freedom of speech” of individuals is framed as evidence of some innate illegitimacy, often presented as a desperate gambit to maintain the power of those in control. I think this is a fundamental mistake. So-called “democratic” countries can afford free speech because they exist within a normative hierarchy stabilised by international institutions, the primacy of their economic systems, and, of course, an as yet unchallenged position within the world order. This makes them more resilient to ideological destabilisation, not because of any innate moral superiority of their systems or ideologies, but because they occupy a materially and normatively privileged position within a particular historical context. As the material power of this world order declines, its normative power follows suit, and this is already evident as states long self-styled as bastions of free speech become less willing to tolerate dissent, from the US to Germany, while at the same time states considered repressive begin experimenting with gradually opening space for discourse.
“If communism’s so great, why is it never successful?” They say. The US behind them nodding along in agreement as it strangles Cuba, forcing it to privatize and open up to foreign capital.
I think that all people should read Fanon, but I especially implore those of the imperial core to do so. You will not have an understanding of how class is structured without it.
In The Wretched of the Earth, Fanon is scathing in his criticisms of the national bourgeois. They are capitalists that form part of the usually previously colonised population. They serve as intermediaries/subsidiaries to the imperial core.
For example, the global owner of McDonald’s is Richard Kempczinski (USA), but the previous franchise operator of all South African locations was our current president, Cyril Ramaphosa. He resigned as owner before his stint as president, but this illustrates that the national bourgeois and national government overlap.
Fanon describes this national bourgeoisie as a class uninterested in the development of their own country, instead placing their securities in western markets and spending their weekends in luxurious European capitals.
For Fanon, the national bourgeois are a greedy caste, get-rich-quick, content to accept dividends from the old colonial power, and incapable of inventiveness. They are 'not even the replica of Europe, but its caricature', and they conceal their mediocrity with cars and holidays on the Riviera.
The bourgeois across the world shares interests, but those of the imperial core are slightly different to those of the periphery. For a wholistic understanding of imperialism and neocolonialism, you must understand the relationship between capitalists of the first and third world.
(Edit: since this post garnered so much attention, I wanted to link my subsequent post regarding the core-periphery model. Neither are exhaustive, but this Fanon post does not fully explain the concept I wanted to convey)
