"Left Here," Mixed Media

A comic I completed as part of a summer course when I was in college, it's the exagerated story of how my grandmother came to live where she did until the day she died.

The reality was that my maternal great great grandmother took her up into the hill to pick strawberries when her paternal grandfather brought her for a visit. She lost track of time, so when she heard the train, she panicked, telling her grandmother she had to head back to leave, but her grandmother told her she would be living there from then on. The way she described it, and probably not exact, as my grandmother passed in 2010:

"I just folded in, hugging my knees and crying, knowing I couldn't go home.

"When we got back to my house, my cousin kept kicking me because I wouldn't stop crying."

It may not be a bad idea to come back to this and tell the story in more accuracy with less drama, because real life isn't always dramatic window shades being pulled and skinned knees.
