â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘ Fanni Luukkonen (1882â1947) at her desk in Ullanlinna, Helsinki, 7 November 1941.
Luukkonen, also known as the "Lotta General," had been involved in Lotta Svärd activities from the very beginning. In 1929, the organization unanimously supported her election as chairwoman. Under her leadership, membership grew from 60,000 to over 240,000, and during the Continuation War, Lotta Svärd was the worldâs largest voluntary womenâs defense organization.
The Lotta women freed tens of thousands of men for military service, working in logistics, headquarters, and support roles, as well as in healthcare, air defense, communications, and many other tasks on both the home front and the front lines.
In 1944, the organization was disbanded under Soviet pressure, and domestic communists also targeted the Lottas, demanding the organization's closure. For many Lottas, this must have been a difficult moment: you do everything to help others, and suddenly your work is publicly treated as if it were a crime. Fanni Luukkonen was 62 at the time, and the closure affected her perhaps more than anyone else. She lived the rest of her life in Helsinki on a small pension from the Lottas and did temporary translation and writing work. The post-war years were mentally exhausting, and she also received anonymous harassing letters and nuisance calls. Despite everything, she tried to maintain her optimism: "A nation endures through its homes."
The psychological strain of the time weakened her already fragile health. In 1945 she said: "I can no longer undertake great efforts." About three years after the dissolution of Lotta Svärd, in October 1947, she died of a heart attack at the age of 65. She was buried in Kruununsaari, Ii, and her gravestone bears the inscription: âThe Fatherland is Godâs idea.â
Today marks the 105th anniversary of the registration of the national Lotta Svärd association on 9 September 1920. This significant womenâs organization in Finnish history still deserves to have its valuable legacy honored. â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘â˘ [ sa-kuva | 127201 ]

Finaly, a colorised version of Daniel! He's such a sweet boy, but people often run from him because of his horns and his constant humming. -Vinnie
