Colonel Hersalo’s 15th Division crossed the state border on the last day of July 1941 and began its offensive as part of the II Army Corps (II AK). Infantry Regiment 36 (JR 36) had already conducted a violent reconnaissance operation in the Pajari area the previous day.

In planning the offensive, a rapid breakthrough was anticipated. The unofficial objective was to reach Hiitola, located about 25 kilometres away, already on the first day. However, the terrain around Pajari and Änkilänsalo was extremely difficult: the few roads, swamps, steep hills, and dense forests slowed the advance, while the enemy stubbornly held its positions. JR 36 became bogged down in fighting around Pajari.

After heavy fighting, the enemy’s defence finally began to break, and JR 36 captured the village of Pajari early in the morning of 3 August. During the first week of the offensive, JR 36 suffered its heaviest losses of the campaign in the areas of Simpele and Rautjärvi, particularly around Pajari. Eversti Hersalon komentama 15. divisioona ylitti valtakunnan rajan heinäkuun viimeisenä päivänä vuonna 1941 ja aloitti hyökkäyksensä osana II armeijakuntaa (II AK). Jalkaväkirykmentti 36 (JR 36) oli kuitenkin tehnyt jo edellisenä päivänä väkivaltaista tiedustelua Pajarin maastossa.

Hyökkäyksen suunnittelussa uskottiin nopeaan läpimurtoon. Epävirallisena tavoitteena oli saavuttaa noin 25 kilometrin päässä sijaitseva Hiitola jo ensimmäisen päivän aikana. Pajarin ja Änkilänsalon maasto oli kuitenkin erittäin vaikeakulkuista: harvat tiet, suot, jyrkät kukkulat ja tiheät metsät hidastivat etenemistä, samalla kun vihollinen piti sitkeästi asemansa. JR 36 juuttui taisteluun Pajarin alueelle.
