Hasenpflug painted a Cologne Cathedral that never existed - finished, gleaming, centuries ahead of reality. When he made this, the cathedral had sat half-built for hundreds of years, its unfinished crane still perched on the south tower as a landmark of the Cologne skyline. Construction wouldn't actually resume until the 19th century, decades after this scene was imagined on canvas. Pure architectural fantasy, sold as a plausible view - right down to the crowds milling in the square as if they'd just stepped out of a completed cathedral that, at the time, only existed in paint.
