17/50 Don't get me wrong I did enjoy this book, but it was a bit slow and I felt like it jumped a little too fast for me. I wish we were able to read a bit more about Tony and read more about their marriage. I did enjoy this one though because I do love Brooklyn itself & reading anything kind of about home makes me happy :) #brooklyn #colmtoibin #saoirseronan #emorycohen #domhnallgleeson #jimbroadbent #juliewalters #bookworm #mostrecent #recentread
Toibin, Colm, Brooklyn. Scribiner, 2009
This book is about an immigrant Irish girl called Eilis who was struggling to settle down in Brooklyn in early 1930’s. The story was New York Times best seller and also played in film directed by John Crowley. Before she moved to America, she was just a regular Irish girl and had no proper job. She had been working for small Grocery store only during the weekend. Eilis lived with her sister and mother. Her sister was only one person who was earning money for family. With the help of Father Flood who is the ravener of Irish community in Brooklyn, Eilis had a place to live in with other girls and a job at Bartocci department store as a cashier. Eilis had a quite of problems and stress of working and living America. However, she ended up got over it and found a love. The book describes what most of immigrants did get through regarding the loneliness and sorrow, yet hope and love of living apart from their home at that time.
This story really touches me sincerely. While I was reading this book I had been in New York for 5 months and I also had a problem as well as Eilis. I felt frustrated about getting a place to live and communicating with other people in English. The book helped me keep going...
