The cold
It was the winter before you left me.
You’d moved out of the house we had rented out the back of Samford,
A little two-bedroom house. Nature all around.
I moved downstairs to the studio apartment space. It was cheaper.
Nothing fancy, one bedroom, a bathroom, and one large open dining/ living space.
A mattress on the floor in the bedroom. Window open with no fly screen.
It was semi functional. I had internet.
No hot water, no kitchen. The shower drained out straight onto the house foundations.
I set a camp kitchen up inside, and had cold showers that entire winter.
The open space bought in the cold, temperature the same inside and out.
My life has been moving from one semi functional space to the next.
It was a cold winter, boiling water to do the dishes, or to try and have a warm wash.
I wasn’t sad, I wasn’t depressed. I liked the simplicity. I liked where I was.
I wasn’t over ally anxious and I was functioning in life.
But, it was cold. I could feel it in my hands and feet. Laying in bed with winter gloves on.
Sleeping in my winter sleeping bag.
Walking around the house wrapped in that same sleeping bag.
I was on the verge of being single again, I could feel it all crumble around me.
Maybe I felt I deserved some sort of punishment for letting that relationship fail.
For letting you slowly step back and leave me.
On the other hand maybe I was truly content in my simplicity.
A couple mornings it frosted on the paddock, inside I could see my breath.
In and out. In and out. Like exhaling smoke.
Wooden floors always cold under the feet.
The wind biting through the air and sneaking in through any space possible.
No heating, no hot water.
Me mostly alone, shivering through the colder windy nights.
Enjoying the morning sun as I sat smoking and drinking coffee on the small veranda.
The entire time I lived there, there was a skip bin sitting outside so the rubbish never piled up like it usually does where ever I inhabit.
Covid was just beginning, or was it just ending...
My memory is foggy around that space.
I just remember the cold.
