Huntress’ Eye, now on my Etsy shop!
For the best quality gesso, use Marble Powder 325-mesh combined with white glue to produce a brilliant application to the surface of your castings. To conserve marble or stone powders when casting large pieces you can dust (salt) the mold surface, brush a thin coating on the surface, spread or roll the powder on or spray a thin coating. The mold is then back to increase the weight to give it the heft and feel of a hot foundry ‘pour’. Get your Marble Powder 325-mesh available online.
The most challenging part in making a full body casting is definitely the eyes. It is virtually impossible to make a head mold with open eyes. The model is asked to close the eyes and the alginate is carefully applied over the lids and into the eye cavities. Therefore, the mold depicts the eyes as closed which will then be replicated in the life casting.
Cold casting is the technique where fine metal, stone or wood powder are used to create objects that is quite similar to those of created in “hot” foundry castings. Cold casting powders are made using bronze, copper and tin as the most common metals, along with less used materials like porcelain, limestone, wood and marble powders to make stone statuary as well as wooden carvings, moldings, cornices and appliques. A metal life cast does not have to remain confined to your dreams due to the cost or preparation time. Fine cold casting powders are available that can easily recreate the look of any metal you want.
Casting a Ring of Hands !
Sorry I haven't been posting much recently. I'm traveling to Thailand next week (yay!), and I've been practically living on campus trying to get everything done before I leave >_<
Anyway, I wasn't going to share this until later, but the other project I've been working on is experimenting with different resin casting techniques. This mask is cold cast bronze, i.e. I added bronze powder to the liquid resin to give it the appearance of real metal. This picture doesn't do it justice, but it really does look like solid bronze in person! It's quite a bit darker than my usual color scheme for these masks, but depending on which reference picture you look at, you could argue that this color is more accurate to the game.
I will probably sell a few of these in limited quantities later this year. I also want to try brass, which should have a more golden appearance.
