Your coffee maker is quietly asking for the right grind.
Four choices appear on many coffee bags, but the answer is simpler than it looks:
☕ Whole bean — Choose this if you own a grinder and want maximum flexibility.
☕ Standard — The dependable choice for most automatic drip coffee makers.
☕ Coarse — Best for French press and most cold-brew methods.
☕ Espresso — A fine grind intended for espresso machines and other methods that specifically require it.
Grind size controls how quickly water extracts flavor. Fine coffee extracts quickly; coarse coffee extracts more slowly. When the grind matches the brewing time, it becomes much easier to produce a balanced cup.
A useful troubleshooting rule:
Bitter or overly dry? Try slightly coarser.
Sour or sharp? Try slightly finer.
Weak? Try using more coffee before changing the grind.
There is no universally perfect grind—only the grind that fits your brewer.
