it’s nearing that time of the night where the human world closes its eyes, and port leiry’s underbelly rolls into awareness. it’s the first time he’s taken his eyes off of matteo in god knows how long, and his brother still flickers across his gaze like sun spots. the curse turns into into an infection. matteo’s in the alley with him, across the street, waving at him from a car window. he’s in the fuck-ass pizza resteraunt, sitting at a table, staring at him with dead eyes. i’m dying. you’re killing me. i’m killing you. we’re killing each other. césar knows it’s not real, he rubs the exhaustion out of his eyes. it stings more than it clears his vision. he knows it’s not real, but he’s here to try and tap into whatever flickering glances are left of his brothers humanity. pizza is a bullshit way to get there, but he has to try something, matteo’s refusing rabbits.
césar sticks his foot in the last opening of doughfellas closing door, bringing his own dead, dark eyes to meet those of the waitress. her scent hits him immediately. petals too sweet for his taste, sunshine tucked in her hair, but, beyond that, is the earthy familiarity of a wolf. and, even deeper … avi’s been here. avi’s touched this one. “ don’t tell me you’re closed, lobita? ”
