Guitar Review // The New ESP LTD Alexi Laiho Sawtooth SE (20th Anniversary)
Twenty years ago, ESP changed the rules of extreme metal by producing the first Signature series guitars for Alexi Laiho, the legendary frontman of Children of Bodom. To celebrate the historic milestone of this partnership, the brand introduces the Special Edition Signature Series Alexi Laiho Sawtooth SE, a true tribute to the musician's enduring legacy of neoclassical solos and blistering speed.
Based on the iconic asymmetric V shape that became Alexi's trademark, this guitar boasts an aggressive look featuring a classic black finish with bright white pinstripes that perfectly align with its beveled body. The construction is fully engineered for high performance, utilizing a three-piece maple neck-thru-body design that ensures incredible sustain and seamless access to the highest frets. The body itself is crafted from alder, a time-tested tonewood renowned for its excellent acoustic balance and resonance.
The main highlight for playability is the Macassar ebony fingerboard, which features the coveted scalloping from the nineteenth to the twenty-fourth fret, making advanced bend and vibrato techniques effortless on the highest notes. The neck features an ultra-fast thin-U contour with an incredibly smooth satin finish on the back, allowing for lightning-quick chord transitions and ultimate comfort. Visually, the fretboard is adorned with the famous mother-of-pearl sawtooth inlays and is equipped with twenty-four extra-jumbo frets
On the back, the instrument showcases a white pinstripe design that pairs beautifully with the iconic COBHC band logo, reinforcing the exclusivity of this anniversary model. In terms of hardware and components, the guitar comes equipped with precise Grover tuners and a double-locking Floyd Rose 1000 bridge, guaranteeing total tuning stability even during the most extreme dive bombs. The electronics feature a single passive EMG HZ FH-2 pickup controlled by a lone volume knob, delivering that raw, heavy, and piercing tone built for the stage.
