It’s not long until Helena grows complacent, even cocky, about her midnight field trips. Her father doesn’t catch her in the act, exactly, but she’s a few months shy of sixteen when he appraises her carefully, eyes slipping down her body as he squints. “The dress isn’t fitting as it should,” he says blandly, and Helena’s whole body jerks for a moment, as if she’s been slapped. The words start spilling from her before he’s even asked for them. “Forgive me,” she says, eyes down toward the carpet, “for the harm I have caused this world. None may atone for my actions but me, and only in me shall their stain live on.” She must be all stain by now, Helena thinks, even as her mouth forms the next sentence.

It feels like a long time before Harmony looks up at her again. That long look again, eyes dragging down from face to chest and lower—like a physical thing, like it could snag on the fabric of her dress. Harmony makes a tch sound, almost maternal. “Just a little longer, all right?” Faux sympathy. The shaking of Helena’s knees must be visible now, and Harmony could offer her a chair. The denial of it, as if she never even considered the possibility, feels like a lump in Helena’s throat, a burning heat under her skin. She hates Harmony for it, and yet to sit now would feel like cheating—anticlimactic, a failure. She wants to endure. To be pure, to be good.
