the protag/coat guy gives me the most trouble bc I feel about it very strongly but it's almost impossible to portray. like these two fuckers mirror and contrast each other so so well but they wouldn't know or admit it. dysfunctional for their whole lives. one repeatedly bangs his head on the wall with more and more casualties each time. another one when upset by something, angrily shoves it 2 millimeters out of the way to continue to painfully stumble on it every time he walks by. zero introspection or capability for change. if they had a tiny speck of self-awareness they could connect so deeply but they don't and it's super central to their characters that they don't. puts head in hands wtf do i do with this. one of them being a visitor is like not even top three of their problems but it sure doesnt help

Coattag: I FELL FOR THE PROPAGANDA I LOVE THEM SM. Gotta love an emotionally vulnerable king x emotionally unavailable king. I love almost all versions of this ship. I don’t like how the fandom kinda UwU twinkifies the Coat Guy but that’s not an issues specific to this ship.
Anyways I feel like they’re depicted well in most of the fanwork they’re in. I love canon divergent so it’s interesting to see a version where the Protagonist excepts the Coat Guy and his hole. Unfortunately they fully rely on canon divergence. Even if the two of them got really close I think in most universes the Protagonist would shoot or kick out the Coat Guy. However I do like the versions of them where the Protagonist is just too depressed to care.
It sounds awful 😭 but like imagine: the Coat Guy reveals himself, the Protag is as expected shaken, but at this point he just doesn’t care anymore. He lets the Coat Guy keep living in his house and the Coat Guy, never having gotten this reaction before, is both grateful and worried about the Protag. I think he’d start doing things around the house and check on him when he can. Slowly they get closer and the Protag becomes less depressed but now he just sees the Coat Guy not as a visitor but someone who cares about him.
LIKE- There’s so much you can do with the two of them. I EVEN WROTE DOWN ‘THEYRE TRAGIC’ AND ‘ONE-SIDED’ BECAUSE THEY ALREADY HAVE THOSE IN CANON. The Coat Guy finally trusts someone enough to reveal his deepest secret and he gets not only rejected but thrown out of the others life.
I keep writing short stories 💀 They just fit each other so well. They could both help each other in different ways. The Protag needs someone who cares deeply, is emotionally intelligent but not sensitive, and someone to listen. The Coat Guy needs someone to just stay and fill the literal void he has. (not in that way……. maybe in that way) And I think they could both be that for each other.
There’s so much I can say about them because depending on what characteristic they each have you get a whole different dynamic and experience with these characters. And most of them are great material!!
