He cut out the logo using his CNC machine, first onto a lino sheet, and then onto wood for the holder and glued them together.
The more I learn about sign language, the more I wish it was a subject they taught in grade school. Beyond that being massively beneficial to anybody who's hearing impaired, it would also be a really convenient solution to some quite specific industrial problems.
I work in an industry where I spend a lot of time in engine rooms and factory floors, and I wear hearing protection constantly. Radio-integrated headsets are expensive, and the better audio quality you need, the more the price climbs. So most places don't have them. They have normal ear muffs and a walkie that you need to dial up to max to use.
And what ends up happening is that people take their hearing protection off and yell over the noise. And that's fine the first few times, but after a long career? There is a stereotype that older machinists are all stone deaf, and it's true more often than not.
You know what would be really handy? A system to communicate without taking the hearing protection off. One that everyone has agreed to, on a national level, so we can use the same system no matter which factory we work in.
We have a gigantic public education system that teaches people exactly these sorts of skills, and we have a language already in place specifically to communicate this way. It wouldn't even have to be full sign language, if that's too big of a leap - it could just be assistive signs to communicate technical stuff. And even if we don't teach everyone in school, we could surely teach it in engineering courses.
I dunno, it just seems like it would solve some problems I encounter all the time, and we have all the tools to do it already in place.
