Story - summarized
Long ago, Yexiao traveled to Lor River City. It was an oasis kingdom touched by the Ocean of Memories, protecting it from sandstorms and disaster. Only in Lor River could Yexiao find the rare Crescent Flower, a delicate moon-shaped flower that grows near desert springs.
Her artwork caught the attention of a palace maid, who suggested that Yexiao work for the queen. With her talent, she definitely impressed Queen Joyeux and earned a spot as a palace official. Yexiao was able to come and go from the palace as she pleased, allowing her to paint whatever she wanted.
However, the Crescent Flowers didn't last long. The Ocean's power was slipping away, and Yexiao knew there wasn't much time left before the kingdom was destroyed. But when she suggested leaving the city, the citizens were horrified: how could they dare to leave the home of their goddess Kalah behind?
Soon, another outsider came to Lor River City. The queen was smitten with him, and Yexiao detected the Ocean's power on the man. She knew that he would be able to convince the queen and her people to leave before the big storm hit.
Many many years later, Yexiao returns to the original site of the desert kingdom. It's long been buried under sand, but a new city is being built nearby. She's lost all her memories of the ancient Lor River... but when she meets Wenren Dian at the new city, she knows it's time to invite Nikki over.
They're all going back in time to protect the future of Lor River.
Connections
-Queen Joyeux is presented as more majestic here, but in Wenren's version of events in Soaring Plumes, the queen was more childish in temper and threw a fit when she realized Wenren didn't want to marry her.
-Yexiao could detect the Ocean's power on Wenren Dian. He's in fact the Envoy of Elegance, someone who lived and worked alongside the God of Styling and Beauty. Soaring Plumes was his first time waking up in MIraland after the battle of the gods (Leonid's Prophecy and God of Styling's Ad Lunam) and he lost most of his memory.
-Lor River's first appearance was back in Love Nikki. It's a city you can visit in the Around the World feature and also is an important location when Nikki had to hide from Nidhogg for a bit in Vol. 1. You can learn more here.
Fun Facts
-Even though Yexiao is just a shadow of someone from the past that escaped a Personality Mirror, the Yexiao that made it to Lor River City is still the girl we've known since Volume 1. We still haven't met the "original" Yexiao.
-The Index has a voice line that calls Lor River "Louchuan." The second word "chuan" refers to a river-based province or region, like in the name Sichuan.
