In my opinion, if his girlfriend is just a cover for Hudson, what difference does it make? It's his decision, and he's a 25-year-old adult with his own career and his own life. If he ever wants to share more about his sexuality, that should be entirely his choice.
Instead, people analyze everything he does, try to find hidden messages, and are unkind to him and the people around him. Even if something eventually came out that genuinely proved he was in a relationship with a man, so what? If that effectively forced him out of the closet, it would be wrong. Even playing a gay character can affect an actor's career opportunities because they may end up being typecast.
I'm sure everyone understands that being gay in Hollywood can still be very difficult. On top of that, being a man of color can bring additional challenges. None of that is a walk in the park. So why make it even harder for him?
Hudson got famous due to starring as a lead gay character on a queer show, and having almost never seen levels of chemistry with his male co-star. Among a lot of fakery in the business, Hudson's portrayal of Shane was deemed genuine, authentic and moving, as is his on and off-screen chemistry with Ilya/Connor.
Hudson has been vocally supportive of the queer community, agrees that queer roles should be played by queer people and has done several queer short movies where he plays queer. Very naked and very enthusiastically. He doesnât shy away from queer innuendos or making gay jokes. He's into queer art and artists, and he is showering his co-star with queer suggesting praise and love.
Hudson got famous due to being a queer role model for an audience of queer people or queer supporting people. He's hinted he's queer, and his affection towards Connor is far beyond fan service. It's genuine and authentic.
Hudson is open about his affections, it's written all over his face. He has never tried to hide or surpress his own queerness, he just hasn't said the words out loud.
Some of his queer audience, who made him famous, are disappointed he's not being open about his sexuality, so that he can be a real role model and be real representation for the queer community. As long as he isn't open about it, he's appropriating a historically oppressed community, aesthetic and culture, while getting straight privilege and not giving any representation. Some take issue with that. The more he pushes his relationship with his gf to the front, the more he provokes and pisses off the queer community who made him famous.
Others take issue with his very public display of heterosexuality. Even if he's gay/queer, doesnât necessarily warrant a beard or a very public relationship. He can be queer without trying to convice people this hard that he's straight or into women. He can also date Connor without trying this hard to prove he's in a relationship with K.
Others, like me, take issue with the lies, manipulation, gaslighting and hypocrisy. We were drawn to Hudson due to his ability to show vulnerabilites, open affection towards men, his authenticity and genuine behaviour, his bluntness and his multitudes. Now that he's trying to portray himself as someone he's not, a one-dimentional fake persona, and it's easy to tell, and he's doing it in order to be more palatable for a straight audience or to hide or soften his edges to appease Hollywood and get roles, and starting to attack fans and others who see through the lies, that's not something a lot of fans will easily tolerate.
You have to remember that those who see the truth, those who champion queer relationships and queer stories, and those who reject fake relationships and manipulation, and are vocal about it, are being targets for homophobia, death threats, fan policing and deemed conspiracy theorists. Not only from fans, but from Hudson himself.
Hudson is now in a postition where he's showing us two extreme versions of himself, one who is very unapologetically queer and no holds barred affectionate towards Connor, and one who is miserably pushing a relationship with a woman he's not even got 1/10th of the chemistry he has with Connor.
So no, it's not as simple as he's queer, he's closeted and hiding and he should be allowed to hide and still do queer roles while killing the queer and in a relationship with Connor rumours with lies, manipulation and attacks. People in general want to make the right people famous, give their power to the right people and put people in positions of power who can make a difference, who can represent them and who they can trust to act in their interest. Right now Hudson is failing at a lot of this, so people are weary.
I also don't think he's faking a relationship with K to hide his sexuality. If he was afraid people would clock his queerness, he would prentend to be straight, through his mannerisms, language and topics of conversation. He's not, quite the opposite. So it must be to hide his relationship with Connor. The way they've handled everything from the start, with the failed PR relationships between C and FA and H having to pull a bigger weight by bringing K more to the forefront than planned (Hudson never should have said she doesnât like to be percieved and the DM doxxing thing is hilarious in hindsight).
So that's what it boils down to. It's not that simple. I think fans, especially queer fans, have the right to question him, question their support and choose how much disrespect and hate they are prepared to tolerate in order to continue to support him and be a fan of his.
