The inside of the off-road diner was a lot warmer than outside. With multiple coffee pots on the fritz, light chatter and the pouring rain hitting the window so far it was blurring the image of the outside world.Â
âHey, Sugar.â
You smiled as you looked up and found not only a fresh coffee, but also Tyler as he slid into the opposite side of your booth.Â
âHey, Cowboy.â
Taking the coffee, you took a sip and were unsurprised when you found it just as sweet as you always made it. âThanks for the coffee.â
Tyler shrugged. âWhat yaâ workinâ on?â
Leaning over, Tyler tried to get a sneak peak of what you were writing. You showed him anyway by flipping the yellow legal pad back to the front.Â
âWriting up the data.â
âBy hand?â
You shrugged, a little tired. âI need to clear my head. Writing it up kinda helps.â
Tylerâs gaze flicked over to you as he flicked through the pages. Youâd been working with the Wrangers for just over a year and heâd seen the same spell in you before.Â
Often, it was when youâd come back from visiting your family or friends.Â
You were burnt out.Â
âYou mind me sticking around for a while? The rain isnât exactly getting lighter andâŚwell, Iâve got nowhere else to be.â
You nodded after a moment with a small smile. âSure.â
Tyler smiled, handing your legal pad back just as a waitress came over.Â
âCan I get you anything?â
Tyler ordered some food before he paused for a moment. And then he added on an extra burger, basket of fries and your favourite milkshake.Â
âTyler, I-â
âDexter said you forgot breakfast this morning,â he told you. âAnd the cashier told me youâve been here for hours. Weâre eating.â
With a small sigh, you smiled and thanked him once more. And, for the next two hours, you both ate and worked. Tyler checked over your numbers whilst you continued writing up the rest.Â
Between the both of you, all the work was finished within a couple of hours and was inputted into the computer. By the time Tyler ordered two slices of pie, all the work was done and your social battery was recharged.Â
âYou got anything else to do today?â Tyler asked you once the rain had finally softened.Â
âNot that Iâm aware of. Why?â
He cocked his head towards the door. âI wanna show you something.â
Tyler paid the check as you excused yourself to the bathroom. By the time you came out, you found him by the door holding your jacket.Â
âWhereâs your car? Because the cashier knows Cathy. She could send someone-â Tyler asked as he looked around the parking lot.Â
âI walked.â
He gave you a look, but you just shrugged. âTold you; needed to clear my head.â
Nodding lightly, Tyler continued to walk you towards his truck. âLadies first.â
As you strapped yourself in, Tyler rounded the front of his truck before swinging himself into the driver's seat.Â
âWhere are we going?â
âYouâll see,â he smiled.Â
It took a little over an hour but the place he took you toâŚ
It was beautiful.Â
Quiet.Â
Untouched.Â
A long expansive meadow that stretched into rolling hills and a never ending pane of blue and grey skies. Any sight of traffic had disappeared twenty minutes ago and there wasnât a chance a set of wheels had ever rolled across the wildflowers.Â
Even in the rain, you stepped out of Tylerâs truck with an open jaw. You only stepped as far as six feet from the front of his truck, terrified to break the image in front of you.Â
âLike it?â
âItâs beautiful,â you breathed. âAre we not gonna get into trouble though?â
âFrom who, Sugar?â
âWhoever owns the land.â
Tyler shrugged beside you. âWe donât have to worry about that.â
âAre you sure? Because the last time one of us trespassed by accident, I was picking Boone up from Rodeo Security.â
Tyler chuckled. âThat was only because heâd wandered too far out from the crowds. And, we donât have to worry becauseâŚI own the land.â
Your jaw dropped again. âWhat?â
Tyler nodded, looking out to the land. âI bought it. Last week.â
âWhat for?â You asked, looking back across the land.Â
âTo build us a home.â
You were stunned into silence. âMost of the meadows will stay, but theyâll be a path leading up to a home big enough for us all. Along with a barn and a couple other cabins. Can make this place a real homebase for us all.â
âHoly shit, Tyler.â
Reaching down, Tyler loosely took your hand into his. âCome with me.â
Solidifying your grip in his hand, you followed him through the muddy ground as he talked you through his plan on where everything would be stationed and how the place would run.Â
âObviously, everyone can have their input and we can iron out the creases but-â
âTyler,â you pulled him to stand in front of you. âIt sounds wonderful.â
âYou think so?â
You nodded. âYeah, I do.â
It took close to two years for everything to be built, secured, painted and moved in. But by the time it was done, that vision Tyler had shared with you that rainy afternoon had come to life.Â
âHey, Sugar?â The screen door rattled behind him. âHave you seenâ there it is.â
âSeen what?â You called out from below the porch.Â
âThe radio,â he called back to you. âBut Iâve got it.â Then he leaned over the railing. âWhatchaâ at?â
You sat back on your heels, trying your best to not get mud in your eyes as you wiped your hair away. âUh, well, Iâm planting the mystery seeds Boone brought from the market. See what springs up. Some Iâve managed to figure out, others areâŚwell, theyâre a mystery.â
Tyler hopped down the back porch stairs until he was standing beside you.Â
âWhat do you need the radio for?â
âWas gonna see if I could get it workinâ again.â
âDexter already tried.â
âDid he use the Tyler method?â
âAnd what is the Tyler method?â
He chuckled. âWouldnât you like to know.â
As he climbed back up the steps, you laughed. âGood luck.â
Ninety minutes later, you went in search of him.Â
âAh-HA!â
Sliding the barn door aside, you walked inside to find Tyler looking like heâd won a million dollars.Â
âSomeoneâs happy.â
Tyler nodded. âCome here.â
Letting him take your hand, he twisted the volume button until the smooth tones of the local country radio station started to fill the space.Â
Then you were dancing.Â
Twirling and swaying in his arms, you felt yourself laugh along with him. âI see the Tyler method worked?â
He nodded. âAll it takes is a little patience.â
You chuckled. âOh, Iâm sure.â
âWhat? It does.â
âAnd you werenât in here yelling at it for an hour and half?â
Tyler nodded his head. âWellâŚI didnât exactly throw it against the wall.â
With a soft chuckle, you heard him laugh, too.Â
Dancing for a couple more songs, Tyler kept bringing you back into him as your boots scuffed against the barn floor.Â
âDid you get the planters fixed up?â
You nodded. âI left Boone two, though. Apparently he wants to try and growâŚsomething. I donât know. Heâs being real secret about it.â
âWell, if I know Boone, itâs probably something cool. You know one year he grew an entire salad garden in the van.â
âSeriously?â
Tyler nodded. âDexter had been reading up on different plants, trying to get a lay of the land. We were there for a couple months helping raise funds for the destroyed towns.â
âTwo EF-4s, right?â
Tyler nodded. âOne after the other. They never saw it coming. Neither did we. But, anyway, Boone had picked it up one day. Next thing I know, heâs yapping about the different kinds of soil that are needed to help feed plants and showing me his cherry tomato plant.â
âWell,â you smiled. âI canât wait to see what he starts growing.â
By the time you and Tyler made it back to the house, dinner was almost ready.Â
âThere you are!â Dani called out as she stirred the large pot on the stove. âThought you two had fallen down a ditch. Dinnerâs almost ready.â
âWhat are we having?â
âChilli. Grab a bowl.â
And, like every night, you and the Wranglers laughed over a decent meal whilst outside the sky started to turn to night.Â
âShouldnât you be in bed, sugar?â
From your seat on the porch swing, you turned your head to find Tyler standing just behind the open screen door.Â
âHey.â
The door shut lightly behind him. âHey.â
Like a habit, you opened up the blanket across your legs to let him sit down beside you before he covered his own, too.Â
âThanks.â
âWhat are you doing up?â
He smiled. âI believe I asked first.â
âCouldnât sleep,â you told him.Â
âGuess you owe me a coke then.âÂ
You chuckled. âIâll get you one tomorrow. Mineâs down to my coffee intake this morning. What about you?â
âCoffee?â Tyler questioned. âShouldnât it be considered your sugar intake?â
âAnd whatâs that supposed to mean?â
âSugar,â your nickname rolled off his lips like honey. âYour ratio of sugar to caffeine is practically tenfold.â
You shrugged. âI like it sweet. And, anyway, why are you up? Or is it just to judge my sugar to coffee intake?â
Tyler chuckled, dropping his head for a moment. âI just couldnât sleep, I guess.â
âDo you wanna talk about it?â
âWhatâs there to talk about?â
You watched him for a moment, mostly to judge his reaction to what you were about to say. âI know youâve been having nightmares.â
âIâm fine, sugar.â
âAre you?â
He was slow to look at you. âI will be.â
âDo you want to talk about it?â
Tyler kept his gaze on you for a beat before looking away and out to the open meadow and the starry sky above it. âI donât think thereâs much to say. Weâve all been through them. Itâs mostly just the usual with the addedâŚcontingencey.â
âWhat kind of contingency?"Â
âWhoâs in danger,â Tyler admitted. âSometimes itâs me. Those ones arenât so bad. But sometimes itâs my folks, or the team. Iâve had a few where itâs just Kate, or just Dexter or just Lily. But most of the time itâsâŚâ
You leaned in a little. âItâs justâŚwho?â
Turning to look at you, Tylerâs voice fell quiet. Soft. Even for him.Â
âYou.â
Again, you stayed quiet, trying to gauge his reaction. But, mostly, he was just trying to gauge yours.Â
âI know youâre capable and that youâd handle it. You have. But, I justâŚones with you are most common.â
âIâm sorry.â
âWhat for?â Tyler asked, a quiet chuckle to his voice. âItâs not real. You are real. Here. Safe. Whatâs up here is justâŚjust my imagination playing a trick on me.â
After a moment, and a nervous swallow, Tyler asked you a question.Â
âHow did you know? About the nightmares?â
You leaned back a little. But not much. âSometimes I can hear you walking down the hallway. Considering you usually sleep like the dead, I figured something had to be waking you up. It seemed like the only plausible explanation.â
Part of Tyler wanted to tell you why he would get up and walk down the hallway after his nightmares. After all, the bathroom was closer to his bedroom than it was yours. If he needed a drink, there was a tap in there.Â
But, instead, he liked to walk to the kitchen. But not before stopping outside your door.Â
In those moments, Tyler wanted to knock on your door softly and turn the handle just enough so he wouldnât completely disturb you. Just so he could check and make sure you were home safe.Â
But those few seconds he stopped outside your door had to be enough.Â
He chuckled, âI should have known youâd figure it out.â
âDo you wanna stay with me tonight?â
Under the surface, you didnât know why youâd offered. But deep down you knew exactly why.Â
And that hidden part of you was happy when, under an hour later, you and Tyler were climbing into bed.Â
Laying side by side in the dark, you both stared at the ceiling.Â
âIâve not just been dreaming all of this, have I, sugar?â
Reaching across, you held his hand. âIâm right here, Ty.â
He squeezed your hand three times. âGoodnight, Sugar.â
âNight, cowboy.â
You woke once in the night, to Tyler shifting in his sleep. He didnât speak or call out, but you knew. So, turning back over to face him, you shuffled closer.Â
âIâm right here, honey. Iâm safe.â
Tyler woke for barely a second, taking a fresh breath of relief. âSugar.â
You felt him lift his arm before it was around your body, holding you closer.Â
âIâm safe. And so are you.â
His breathing soon became even again, and so did yours.Â
By the time you woke up in the morning, you and Tyler were just limbs tangled together. And, despite the queen sized bed, you and Tyler were huddled together as if it was just the size of a single.Â
âHowâya feelinâ?âÂ
âTired,â Tyler drawled as he closed his eyes again. âBut good tired.â
You smiled a little. âGood.âÂ
After a while, Tyler spoke again. âThank you, for staying.â
âAlways.â
âNo, I mean it,â he said, his voice quiet as his gaze softly bore into your own. âYou didnât have to do that. But you did. And I know I woke you up soâŚthank you.â
After a moment of quiet, you nodded. âYouâre welcome.â
Little did Tyler understand, you would always stay with him. Because he was the first to ever stay for you.Â
That day in the diner, youâd been struggling. Internally, at least.Â
You loved your family. ButâŚthey could be a lot to handle sometimes. Usually, if there was a crisis going on, you rarely noticed it. But it was more prominent when there wasnât.Â
Those âquietâ days with them, in the nicest term, felt like torture. A torture that made you overstimulated and had you begging for just a few hours of peace.Â
From there, a door seemed to open in your head and it very quickly could turn into a rabbit hole that seemed like it was neverending.Â
But Tyler stayed.Â
Youâd never know why, but you were glad he did.Â
So, despite the unexplainable feeling you had towards Tyler that had you staying anyway; if he ever asked, youâd tell him youâd stayed because he stayed first.Â
