Welp, this sucks.
I don't agree with Tumblr's new privacy policy of being able to store and access information on my device and selling it. (If the Clippy pfp was hint enough, I'm very against this type of bullshit).
I'm currently posting this via browser from a burner laptop that I wipe frequently, using ad-block and a VPN, in order to get around having to press agree to the new TOS.
in other words, I take my privacy seriously, and will not be using Tumblr via the app for the foreseeable future. I will still be using the browser to give updates on this situation using my current method. I will always be using a VPN and ad-block of course, so I'm not giving them any profit from my usage.
sorry to all my mutuals who I'll inevitably lose contact with. I don't currently know of an alternative site to move to, so I may be MIA for the foreseeable future until something is done about this policy, which frankly I can't see happening during this current US administration.
If you've somehow managed to avoid pressing agree on the new TOS, I urge you not to accept if you still can. I know it's hard, but they'll never learn if we just keep pressing accept. We need them to know enough is enough.
Going forward, my activity will decrease to just posting updates twice a month or so from my browser. I urge you guys to do the same if you can, so Tumblr gets the message (kinda like what discord and microsoft are experiencing now).

me researching Clippy's connection to Autism because multiple have called me autistic because of my pfp
The YouTube boycott is still ongoing.
Why the boycott? YouTube has created an ai age verification policy which uses a machine learning algorithm to detect the age of it’s users and upon deciding that a user is a minor, it will impose restrictions on their account. In order for a user wrongfully detected as a minor to repeal the restrictions put upon them they need to provide YouTube with personal identification which indicates they are older than 18. We want this policy removed.
Why does this policy matter? This policy is allegedly made to protect children, however by collecting large amounts of information on children and putting a big fat stamp on their account that says “minor”, they are suddenly much more vulnerable should an information breach happen on YouTube’s end. It is not only children who are affected by this but also adults, who due to needing to give their ID, now have more sensitive information under YouTube’s possession, and despite claims that the information does not stay in their systems, it is difficult to be certain wether or not they are telling the truth.
Broader impact: a policy like this could set a precedent for other technological companies; if YouTube can get away with requiring ID, then they can too. Putting up with this policy will likely only further the control large tech corporations have over their users, and the hostile nature of the tech industry. Not only that but there are additional concerns regarding censorship and what gets considered ‘kids media’. If one organisation/group of organisations is in control of the media children see they can control how the children think and make it exponentially more difficult for them to form their own ideas and opinions separate from the status quo.
What you can do: due to the nature of YouTube and the fact it is a monopoly, it is near impossible to completely separate yourself from it. So instead the goal of this boycott is to reduce how much you use YouTube as much as is in your personal capabilities. We are trying to cut of their revenue and their data points, so anything and everything you can do to reduce those two things will help. Get an ad blocker, use a service like FreeTube, avoid watching videos, use Internet Archive, watch things as groups instead of individually. All of it helps. There is no good alternative to YouTube and so our options are limited, but we still have options. Telling people about the boycott and encouraging them to do research on the subject will help immensely as well. The more people boycotting the better.
This boycott is intertwined with larger movement promoting the idea of a user friendly internet and fighting back against hostile business practices within the tech industry in order to make it happen. The symbol used to represent this movement is Clippy, with the reasoning that Clippy may have been annoying, but he was there to help with no ulterior motive. 📎
Biases: anti-censorship, pro-internet privacy.
Not fact checked: do your research please
