A wedding ring signals social status and “seriousness” about women (and it can subconsciously reduce assumptions about lifestyle). It may trigger more respectful and formal treatment. It signals one have someone at home who will notice her care.

These are all described as cognitive shortcuts lazy minds default to.

It’s unfortunate because what it’s really doing is: borrowing credibility from a relationship, signaling you are “claimed” or validated by someone else, playing into traditional social hierarchies, none of which should have anything to do with your healthcare.

Psychology calls this social heuristics:

Mental shortcuts the brain uses to make fast judgments, based on pattern recognition instead of deep analysis; appearance triggers automatic assumptions. It bypasses critical thinking entirely.

Why is it dumb?

Just like a push up bra and hair extensions change the look of a woman… If a wedding ring changes how they treat her, they were never assessing her as a citizen to begin with. They were assessing social signals and appearances.
