A foggy Northern California clifftop for @geopsych 's New Year's treasure hunt. I have enjoyed this #noticing stuff festivity so much. In conclusion: Hurray!

The allegory was composed in the 5th century BC by the philosopher Prodicus (Xenophon, Memoirs of Socrates, Book II, Chapters 1, 21 ff.). While young Hercules was tending the flocks of his earthly father, King Amphitryon, on the pastures of Cithaeron, two women came to him, personifying Effeminacy and Virtue. In Batoni's painting, they are represented as Venus, the goddess of love, and Minerva, the goddess of wisdom. One tempted him with the joys of life, the other called him to labor and heroic deeds. Hercules, after much contemplation, heeded the voice of reason and dedicated his life to serving humanity. The putti at Minerva's feet commemorate Hercules' future exploits. They hold a hero's club and a lion's skin. Also depicted are Cerberus, Hades' three-headed guardian, and the seven-headed Hydra. A stern Minerva points to a temple on a clifftop—an allegory for the arduous path to glory. A glamorous Venus offers Hercules a rose. At her feet lie the trappings of vanity and sensual pleasure: musical instruments, sheet music, and a basket of fruit.

Decades after the war, Ile-Rien is back on its feet and beginning to thrive once more. The wizards of Lodun University and government have developed their spell spheres, making them into magical computers. Using these, they're able to take the newly refurbished Queen Ravenna back through a reconnected gateway into the other world. On arrival, the ship enters the calm summer waves and sounds its horn as it sails toward the coastline, where it is greeted by a native longship and the cheering crews and passengers of both vessels exchange pleasantries.
