See Some Evil, Hear Some Evil is an odd duck of episode
All the kids are really in their feelings in this ep, but between the two pairs, I'm really only invested in Clay and Kimiko's mutual conflict here
"Hey, I reckon I owe you a big thank you for making fun of the way I talk." "It's a pleasure. And thank you for pointing out my many anger flaws."
Clay and Kimiko struck deep in parts about each other that I can understand shaking them up.
How Clay speaks is a reflection of where he's from, of who he is, of the parts of himself that he takes pride in and finds home in
It's Texas
And as complicated as his feelings are about the people in Texas he knows, Texas itself is so important to him.
Clay's always been told to throw parts of himself away. He's often bowed his head and hidden many of parts in compliance because he knows how others must see him (hence the embarrassment and shame you sometimes hear in his, "What, a cowboy can't...?" or his interactions with his Daddy and sister and Granny), but this is a big part of himself. This is the one thing about him that gets to show and that is genuine
He can't imagine being asked to throw this part of himself away
He can't understand his friends wanting him to throw that part of himself away. He knew a lot of himself was under scrutiny, but not that part
And Kimiko's temper is a reflection of the fact that she's not great with her emotions, and she's aware of that
She tries to temper them and control them because it's so dangerous if she's not in control. She's not trying to have another Tomachiko incident. She's tries so hard to be more careful. So to be told that she's not aware of her own emotions or her own anger, truly hurts and concerns her. She's been working on finding her center since the very beginning of the series
As hot-headed as Kimiko is known for being, she actually suppresses a lot of her emotions. She's constantly holding herself back and putting in an effort to be mindful of how she feels. Every single thing Kimiko says and does is measured. She thought she was doing pretty good with it actually
But here Clay is, thinking about her as "the angry one" when she's actually so much angrier than she ever actually lets herself express with her friends
They had to bust out the mindreading for Kimiko and Clay.
Because they didn't know how they were perceived by others vs how they perceive themselves here. These are things that could only come to light by peering into someone's mind and listening to their thoughts about them
And Kimiko and Clay will gradually make progress with how they see each other as the series continues
Clay and Kimiko are having this tension about things that are deeply part of their characters and just who they individually are as people...
...But the other half of the conflict isn't a reflection of Omi or Raimundo's deep characters.
"I'll just tell Omi that I went out to meditate. He believes everything he's told."
"I am still most uncertain of Raimundo's trustworthiness."
Omi already knew Raimundo takes advantage of his ignorance; Raimundo knew Omi is still hurt by his betrayal
It's not even really an insult; it's just a summary of recent events and the way they openly feel about each other for the majority of the series. This is stuff they'll say out loud without anyone needing to read their mind, so it doesn't belong in the mindreading conflict episode, it'll be in every episode anyway
They learned nothing new about themselves or each other.
And in all three seasons, Raimundo never stops being happy to manipulate Omi, and Omi's trust in Raimundo never fully heals (Especially with what happens in The Return of Master Monk Guan), so this debate won't even go anywhere
While Clay and Kimiko are having this interesting character study on their end, these two are just...
Raimundo: 'Omi is so gullible, it's funny how easy he is to trick and manipulate. He knows nothing about the real world or social interactions. I just lied to him yet again, and I have no doubt he bought it, hook line and sinker. I could do or say anything to Omi to take advantage of his naivety and I bet Omi would still believe me. It's all in good fun anyway, and that kid trusts everything, lol'
Omi: '...Actually I am not sure I feel comfortable trusting Raimundo anymore. I knew Raimundo lied sometimes, but I was okay with believing in him because never thought he would do so to hurt us. But now that he willfully chose to hurt us by deliberately taking advantage of the trust we used to place in him and how traumatic that event was for me, my belief in Raimundo has been deeply shaken. Also, I literally just read his mind and I know that he lied to me again.'
