Frozen Lake Champlain. Oil on board. 8x10 in. This time, I tried Ampersand claybord with oil. Even though the surface of the claybord didn’t seem absorbent when I was applying gouache and casein to it, with oils it did seem pretty absorbent. The oil paints dried or rather set quickly on this surface which allowed me to apply several layers of paint, using the alla prima technique. Also, the finish of the completed painting is almost completely matte, without the usual shine of wet oil paint, which makes it very easy to photograph the artwork.
