Clay Face
Intro!
Hi, I'm Mariah. I'm a 16 year old girl from the East Bay Area in California. I handmake little creatures and I plan to start selling them to make people happy and get some money.
So far, I only have one event coming up and that is Asahi Con. Asahi Con, usually hosted in April but has been postponed to August this year, is an event hosted yearly at Antioch High school with a lot of different vendors, from food, to crafts, to games, it's awesome in my opinion but I guess I'm biased lol.
I'm selling about 20 of my freaky little creations for between $10 and $45. Originally my goal was to raise money to go to Aftershock–a 4 day long music festival in Sacramento–however I've already gotten the money I need through family, so now I really just want some spending/saving money, some of which is probably going towards hair dye lmao
Anyway, I've talked enough. Here's some examples of my previous work and a peek at what I'll be selling in August!
Superhero reviews: Batman the animated series “Feat of Clay part 1” and “Feat of Clay part 2”, this is gonna be a controversial one.
I wanna start this by saying that there is a LOT I love about Feat of Clay, this is overall one of my favorite episodes of Batman the animated series. There is ALOT to love about this episode.
The tragedy of Matt Heagon is one of my favorite villain stories of Batman: the animated series. In part because Heagon is already kinda a piece of shit before becoming ClayFace, and yet the show still manages to make what happened to him sympathetic. His disfigurement is not some “just come upins” it’s a tragedy that is meant to make you sympathetic towards him. And the episode does that wonderfully while also setting up the personality traits that would naturally lead Heagon to being a villain (mainly his selfishness and ego). It’s all suburb and the fake out at the end when it’s revealed his “death scene” was a phony was *Chefs kiss
The animation during the scene where ClayFace falls apart is also stellar. Again, I love seeing the BTAS animation team get a chance to flex to spite the limited animation budget of a 90s cartoon. And I commend them for this genuinely an amazing scene.
Part 2 of “Feat of Clay” in general is great, I love seeing Bruce trying to help Heagon, and I love it blowing up in his face.
And I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that this episode introduces one of my favorite BTAS villains, Roland Daggat.
That being said there are some MAJOR issues that I don’t think get discussed enough when talking about this episode that unfortunately drag it down for me. Mostly during the second half of part 1, from about 13:00 minutes in to the end.
The part where Batman acts stupid.
To start off this critique, what was the point of the Raymond Bell plot line? Because from my vantage point it seemed to only exist to fill time. Raymond Bell doesnt Bruce or the audience any new information, false leads CAN be useful in a detective story dont get me wrong. They can provide the detective with bits of information, act as a red herring to lead the audience off the trail, or just be intresting little stories in their own right!
Raymond Bell is none of those things. Worse his section serves to make Bruce seem very stupid “he fainted” no shit, of course he fainted you were hanging him from a plane for an extended period of time!
Listen, Bruce using extra judicial intimidation bullshit on criminals is neither OOC nor necessarily somthing I disagree with writing him doing, he’s the dark knight not the friendship knight. But those other intimation scenes tend to be either
1. Brief/ less extreme compared to “whole ass sequence where Batman flys around with a guy dangling in the air from his helicopter”
2. Actually gives the hero Useful information
Useally a combination of both.
When they aren’t brief it’s useally for some emotional reason, like to highlight Dicks distress in Robins reckoning.
This scene though in my opinion is not only gratuitous, it’s also a huge waste of time. Raymond gives neither us the audience nor Bruce ANY new information, doesn’t progress the story, doesn’t work as a red herring because we as the audience already KNOW what’s going on by this point in the episode, and Raymond isnt interesting enough as a character to be worth the time spent on him.
This entire scene reaks of a writing staff that didn’t know how to fill time so just added in some fillar.
But this is far from my biggest issue with the matter half of episode 1, no that goes to Bruce breaking into Luciuds hospital bed.
Picture this, you are a relatively intelligent man/superhero who’s civilian identify is being accused of attacking your most trusted work pal, by said work pal, who is currently in the hospital for being jumped, presumably by you. You need to talk to your work pal in-order to figure out what happened but for obvious reasons they won’t let you (as the civilian accused of doing the jumping) into the hospital room.
Do you
1. Use your skills of deception to disguise yourself as a nurse to get in
2. Use your superhero identity to sneak in and ask Lucious as a superhero is is well known atp for sending criminals to Justice.
3. BREAK INTO THE HOSPITAL as your CIVILLIAN identity, presumably by climbing into a window, and get your ass arrested.
Listen Bruce making mistakes, I’m not against, Bruce is a flawed character and his allowed to make mistakes based on gaps in information, well established personality flaws, or just basic human fallibility. A good example of this is the battionson movie, where Bruce relative inexperience and privileged position leads to him misinterpreting a vital clue.
THIS SCENE is NOT THAT. It’s neither an understandable human mistake nor the culmination of Bruce’s character flaws. It’s Bruce BEING STUPID for the sake of making a good cliff hanger for the next episode.
*Sigh*
I really want to give this two parter a higher ranking since Matt Heagen is such a great character, and part 2 of the episode is genuinely amazing. But unfortunately this glaring flaw keeps me from giving it anything more than a 3/5. It’s a HIGH 3/5 MAYBE a low 4/5 (though I think 3/5 works best). Shame with a bit of editing this could have been up their with heart of Ice.
