We went to the Beebe Badger football game tonight in honor of my 25th high school reunion. It was weird to walk by this group and see so many of my high school classmates' faces all in one place again.

Part 2 of Prom: 1999

Since captions apparently don’t work, I’ll just put the notes right here.

1- 2 Besides corset tops with tulle skirts, the other big trend was having a sheer overlayer. One of my best friends had a dress like the one on the left, but in black and red (and, yes, it was gorgeous).

3, 4, 5 For some reason this catalog was pushing bustle dresses, something I didn’t see at all at my prom. But I would shank a bitch for the purple crossdye strapless dress. Not joking. I would’ve worn it but my mother vetoed that idea.

6-7 Another couple of good hair and makeup examples. My only complaint is that none of the models in this catalog is wearing a Y necklace (maybe there’s one but that’s it). Y necklaces with rhinestones, sometimes in a flower shape, were quite The Thing. Otherwise, yeah. That’s it. I myself wore hairpins with rhinestone flowers.

8-9 Last but not least: my dress 💗 All of these dresses were all but floor-length on us real people. They definitely shortened them on the models, but whatever. I was made to wear (slightly ugly) plain white pumps with big square heels. I had wanted to wear sparkly strappy sandals but, again, my mother vetoed that idea. Sigh. And, yes, I still have this dress. I wore it both in 1999 and 2000...

But in 2000 I had a Renaissance-style overdress that I wore with a flower crown and everything. 

The year is 1999. And this is Prom Season... 

Corset tops with tulle skirts dom-in-a-ted the looks. The magazine articles all said “If you want to wear a Cinderella dress to prom, this is the year!”

Captions suck, here’s my notes:

1-2: front cover and inside front cover. Note the Shakespeare quote. There was a strange revived interest in Shakespeare in the late 90s, mostly thanks to the movies.

3-4 So much beading. So much crossdye. So many rosettes.

5, 6, 7 You have no idea how many corset tops with tulle skirts there were this year. No idea. It was so very much The Thing. I can recall at least 5 or 6 friends who wore them.

8 Ever After came out in 1998 and a lot of us wanted to wear that magnificent white dress with wings, the “Just Breathe” dress. This one was regarded as pretty close. You don’t see many empire waist dresses in this era--a few, but not many. As if to drive home the point, the style here is named “Drew.”

But, really, where do you draw the line to end the era of “Y2k fashion”? 2001? 2005? 

Anyway, if I can find any old pictures of myself from c. 2005 wearing my favorite black peasant skirt with a semi-sheer striped button-down shirt over a white camisole (with lace, of course!) and flats--and a black skinny scarf!--I will post it. 

That was a post-college outfit that I only wore sometimes. I was usually in jeans and intentionally small t-shirts from Old Navy lmao...
