Domingo tranquilo en México: 22/ FEB/ 2026
Hi again. So if you could rate the most powerful (drug dealer) right now in Mexico, who is it? Is it el chapo or el mayo? Other?
Also what you can tell us about el mencho?
Thank you so much.
Hi Nonni! I hope you’re having a good day
Ooh boy right now that’s pretty much up in the air. It’s definitely not El Chapo, considering he’s slowly losing his mind in ADX Florence from lack of human contact and whose family basically fled to the US. It’s not Mayo either since the civil war basically weakened Sinaloa (which is basically a dumpster fire right now.) Up until a few weeks ago it was definitely Mencho as the leader of the CJNG. Right now, the US fucked up again and had el Mencho killed, which created a power vacuum and will cause the CJNG to possibly splinter and cause more violence. As of this month, it’s kinda safe to say that el Pelon (Juan Carlos Valencia Gonzales) is the new leader of the CJNG, since el menchito was arrested in 2015. At least for now, it seems that he won the fight for top dog, but he will have to consolidate power, and he’s already faced conflict since there was fighting in Guanajuato.
Also what you can tell us about el mencho?
About Mencho? Pretty much what’s known out there. The basic story is that he started in Michoacán (as opposed to Sinaloa) and grew up poor and was only able to get a 5th grade education before going to work the fields as well (sound familiar). He then travelled to the US in the 80’s and was going back and forth between Mexico and the US to get meth and heroin there. Eventually he was deported at age 30. Once in Mexico, he became a state cop in Jalisco (remind you of someone?) and he went into drugs full time and got with the Milenio cartel (the Proto-CJNG, if you will) and married the leader’s sister. They were chased out of Michoacán by the zetas (another cartel) and landed on Jalisco and started to work with Nacho Coronel from Sinaloa. Eventually there was a civil war for leadership and that’s how Mencho rose to power but he had to consolidate it. Part of Mencho's success as a Narco had to do with the fact that even when young, the man was savvy and was able to strategize market and consumer changes. Earlier this year, the military captured him on an operation which got violent. I’m talking shootouts and explosions (see what I mean when I say that sometimes the reality would make better tv than fiction? In narcos case, that’s usually true), and basically Mencho got shot. They captured him but he died from his wounds while getting him to CDMX to get medical care.
Obviously, the story is longer than that, and there’s more to tell, but that’s a good summary, I think. He did more and even formed his own death squad. But, yeah. What’s so impressive about Mencho is that it basically took him 10 years to build what it took Sinaloa 30. Granted, Sinaloa’s methods were more calculated and deliberate, Mencho used a lot of plain brute violence (by recruiting ex military or police and using their experience and tactics), human trafficking and racketeering. In fact, narcotic sales only make up about 30-40% of the cartel’s profits. They have a presence in 23 states in Mexico and several states in the US. They also have to follow the cartel rules (mandates handed out straight from Mencho).
But yeah, let me know if you have any specific question on Mencho or the CJNG. Also, can we all appreciate his mugshot? One of the greatest mugshots I’ve ever seen. The man had style.
