The… uh battle… or rather… Clembot’s first battle… or rather, this incarnation of Clembot’s first battle… made me quite reflective of everything once it was all said and done.
I kept it together pretty well during the event… I suppose because as a gym leader and someone who needed to support Clembot during this occasion, it was necessary. Focusing on the battle itself helped quite a bit as well…
But, regardless, I wanted to showcase this battle because it was important… not just for me, not just for Clembot, and not even just for Alva, but for all of us.
It… felt like a chance to reclaim the normalcy that we seemed to have lost after the Team Flare attacks on Lumiose.
So it began, Alva’s bid re-challenge the gym, and in particular, Clembot.
And I would be right behind him as he took on this new challenger...
Thankfully my dad decided that stepping in to referee during Clembot’s inaugural match since his repair would be a good idea, and I agreed. Considering he was the only previous League Member qualified to do so besides myself, since I would be coaching Clembot.
The battle began as I predicted, with Clembot sending out Magnemite.
Alva responded with his Vivillion.
Clembot’s analysis of opposing pokemon seemed to be in working order, as I hoped.
However…
Clembot’s lack of experience in battle (since such a thing is… difficult to program as is, the learning subroutines are what help Clembot develop pattern recognition and strategy) left him open to more creative tactics Alva employed, counting an electroball on the onset and using quiver dance to bolster its own abilities.
This sent Clembot into something of a tailspin as it tried to analyze both its movements and potential tactics. I had to remind Clembot that there’s more to battle than that, and he had to focus.
However, this was the opening that Alva took advantage of, and using a sleep powder attack…
…And a swift decisive energy ball afterwards, Vivillion was able to knock Magnemite out of the battle.
I had to offer a stern critique after that battle, but… it was necessary. And I’m certain Clembot knew it too, since he quickly moved on with the battle…
…and sent out Magneton.
Alva, however, riding on the wings of his previous victory, felt that the same tactic would work again.
However, I programmed Clembot better than that!
Learning from previous experience, he had Magneton execute rain dance, dousing the sleep powder!
(I won’t lie… it reminded me a bit of… my battle with Ash and his Goodra…
And naturally, using the inherently effective combination of that weather move and thunder, Clembot defeated his first pokemon challenger!
Alva, pretty incensed from this quick turnaround, tried to play the type-advantage card against us with a Pyroar. However, Clembot proved the more adaptable and managed to take Pyroar down before any real damage was done.
Naturally, I offered some good words of praise and encouragement for Clembot! He was learning so fast already… if I were less aware… I might’ve almost believed he were remembering… how he used to battle…
Of course… that’s impossible in these circumstances, but… that’s not what was important then.
It was the battle… there… in the moment, as Alva sent out his most trusted pokemon, Cubone.
Up to this point, Alva had been fairly balanced in attack and defense with his tactics, but this time, he gave Clembot no quarter. A bonemerang attack, which we blocked with a sonic boom, was brutally followed up by a bone club attack, which knocked Magneton out cold.
I had to point out to Clembot that surprising shifts in battle style or tactics were a part of this process, and that he would have to adapt to that as well. (Once more this is something that seemed to remind me of my own battle with Ash…)
My advice was something he quickly took to heart, I’m sure, as he sent out his final pokemon: Helioptile, my own starter.
Alva, his passions raised by the stakes of the rematch, went on the offensive again, but Clembot was more than able to predict it this time, making ample use of Heliolisk’s exceptional speed to dodge the attacks.
I swear for a moment, I could see shades of Clembot’s old battling style… I really do wonder if there’s ever fragments of code of the old Clembot that survived…
Anyway…
Alva, stirred by his own memories and determination to not have a repeat of this battle pressed on. We traded blows with him! Dragon tail against bone club! Bonemerang against focus blast! And again!
But both Cubone and Alva were the more determined of the two, and they managed to push through the attacks and their move struck true against Heliolisk.
The battle was over. Our first battle, since zero…
Now it was One.
Clembot, as I had intended him to, accepted the defeat graciously, congratulating Alva and rewarding him with the Voltage Badge.
As with Ash, we were starting from zero, and we already took our first step back to our path forward. And Clembot and I promised each other, just like before…

Actually, in light of your evolved status as a newly formed AI, as well as your exceptional battle performance, and your stellar ability to run the gym in all respects beyond battling, I may be putting a petition to the Kalos Pokemon League in the near future to make you a full gym leader, in addition to myself, for the Lumiose City Gym.
You've demonstrated to me the ingenuity, the dedication, and the resourcefulness to hold such a position, and your deeds beyond the gym have spoken greatly to your character as well.
The scientist sent out Magnezone in an attempt to subdue us. Clembot was a bit damaged from the fall after the magnet was rendered inert, so I took over. After all, it was my turn to fight for my friends, be they made of metal or not.
I replied with Luxray, who battled with all the ferocity and potency I’ve come to expect of him!
In the end we bested him, and I lectured him on not only the ill morality of his actions in his criminal acts, but his treatment of those in his service as well, both pokemon and robots alike.
Officer Jenny carried out her arrest, and we finally could relax knowing that Clembot’s reputation and freedom, along with Lumiose City’s safety, was secured.
We even received a few parting words from Blaziken Mask before he parted ways with us!
We’ve been waiting here for quite a while, but it seems that our patience and diligence has paid off. Just as we suspected, Dark Clembot arrived to attempt to break into the building, and his creator was there as well; a man of science it seems. I suppose he would have to be in order to even follow the instructions to build an altered version of Clembot, but in either case, he gives science a bad name!
Clembot was first to strike, bringing his imposter down to the courtyard with necessary force, and drawing our opponents into the open.
I left the matter to Clembot, since it was his reputation that was damaged by these events, while the man who created Dark Clembot left him to deal with us, seemingly eager to prove to us that his is the superior model.
I disagree, and so does Clembot.
We’re now in the thick of a battle, with Clembot fighting along with my partner, Heliolisk, and Dark Clembot using Magneton.

Jasmine and I have focused on mainly training for the past several days. Bronzor's combination of Gyro Ball and Iron Defense has been evolving well, but Steelix is having some trouble with Iron Tail and Sandstorm. Mawhile and Magneton's training with defensive positions was... less than successful, so we tried a more offensive approach. Much to our pleasant surprise, both excelled on offense... I'm curious to see how they will develop. Skarmory's in-flight maneuverability training is going well. We will try to combine Spikes application with these new maneuvers soon. However, most of our focus will be on a new addition; the Klang that Jasmine recently received from a... friend. With the veteran Emolpeon needing little training, it was sent back to assist Janina in her new gym duties in order to create room. A lot of conditioning will be needed to have Klang catch up with the rest of Jasmine's team, so that will be our main focus for the next few days. However, the training will need to be put on temporary pause. As... interesting of a town Veilstone is, it appears that my appointment with a certain robotic friend of mine draws near, and my host is in dire need. As such, Jasmine and I will be taking the next flight to Kalos tonight. I cannot sit idly by as my allies are unjustifiably prosecuted. Updates will be posted as they come.
Hello there, Clembot! I hope the following request doesn’t disturb operations at the gym in a way that is too disruptive. However, I require something of you.
I need you to prepare Heliolisk for transport to the Pokemon Center in Nimbasa City this coming Friday. I’ll require him for my participation in the Wallace Cup!
Thank you, and sorry for any inconveniences this may cause. I’ll transfer him back at my earliest opportunity.
