Euplotes ciliates resting and feeding. These single-celled organisms have cilia hairs which are bunched up into tufts called 'cirri' which function like little legs, allowing them to walk along the substrate.
This individual was found in a water sample from the Tama river in Tokyo, painted in gouache.
Pencil studies of an Amphileptus ciliate, who I watched ambush and swallow up a little Synchaeta rotifer into its cell and felt humbly reminded that multicellular animals are not necessarily above single-celled organisms in the food chain.
A ciliate got stuck in a broken pipette tip, but it escaped pretty quickly after I started filming
