Todayâs Yiddish Fun Fact: ×××Ś×¤× / chutzpah (impudence, audacity, the mysterious quality possessed by men who gesture at women to remove their headphones on public transit) comes to Yiddish from Aramaic, but has since been borrowed *from* Yiddish into Czech, Dutch, German, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, and, of course, English.
This isn't a subtle protest.... And he doesn't get it. Many of the people in the room don't get it:
Trump Weird News - FBI Director - "Take The Fifth, Please !!!"
If you marched on demos saying âCrush Israelâ, then you can hardly complain about Trumpâs mad vision for Gaza.
by Brendan O'Neill
A new definition of chutzpah just dropped. Itâs people thinking they can spend 16 months crying âCrush the Zionist entity!â and then wring their hands over the threat of âethnic cleansingâ. Itâs protesters thinking they can wail âFrom the river to the sea, Palestine will be freeâ â shorter version: erase Israel â and then accuse others of wanting to âcleanseâ the Middle East of âproblematicâ people. Itâs an activist class that is consumed by a burning hatred for the very idea of a Jewish homeland thinking it can lecture its opponents on the importance of respecting other peopleâs homelands.
I can stomach some hypocrisy, but I draw the line at pontifications on âforced removalâ from a political set that dreams of removing the Jewish State from the family of nations. Behold the orgy of sanctimony that has greeted Donald Trumpâs nutty proposals to push Palestinians out of the Gaza Strip so that he might turn it into the âRiviera of the Middle Eastâ. Weâll come back to Trumpâs vision, if you can call it that. But first we need to take down the idea that he has unforgivably put âethnic cleansingâ on to the agenda for the Middle East, for the truth is that the Westâs influential Israel-loathers did that long ago.
The fury over Trumpâs Gaza idea is intense. He proposed resettling its population so that the Americans might go in and remake the place. We will ârebuildâ this âdemolition siteâ, he said. The right-thinking are horrified. Heâs flouting all the âestablished lawsâ of international relations, says the Guardian. One wonders where this white hot fury was during earlier crusades of ânation-buildingâ. From Bosnia to Libya, Iraq to Afghanistan, Washington and its allies dispatched local leaders, caused mass exoduses of people, and assumed the godly right to remake said country in their own âdemocraticâ image. And the Guardian often supported it. Keep your wigs on, people â Trump is not the first US president to propose ârebuildingâ a nation.
Still the cries of âethnic cleansingâ have come thick and fast. Trumpâs proposal would amount to an âalarming escalationâ in the âethnic cleansing of Palestiniansâ, says Human Rights Watch. The UN also says it is âethnic cleansingâ. The left has been Trumpâs noisiest critic. We know Israel has been âplotting the violent removal of Gazaâs surviving populationâ, says one commentator, and now these âgenocidalâ ambitions are being abetted by the American president. Student radicals at Columbia University in NYC are damning Trump for âadvocating for ethnic cleansingâ â a ballsy position for a campus where just a few months ago Jewish students were being told to fuck off back to Poland.
Whatâs exasperating about all this is that weâve just come through 16 months of shameless agitation for the end of the Jewish State. Modern anti-Israel activism, at root, is a dream of ethnic cleansing. Consider Columbia. Its woke students are fuming over Trumpâs Gaza idea. Yet this is a campus where apocalyptic Israelophobia has run riot since Hamasâs pogrom 16 months ago. Campus activists referred to Israel as âthe pigs of the Earthâ and fantasised about a future when it would die. âWe donât want no two states / We want â48!â, they cried, referring to 1948, when the modern state of Israel did not yet exist. Plainly put, they want the obliteration of the Jewish homeland.

Actor and comedian Jon Lovitz laid into Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) in a Friday post on X, saying that her post wishing Jews everywhere a âHappy Hanukkahâ was âthe definition of the word âchutzpah.'â
Pointing out the fact that Tlaib had voted â and bragged about her vote â against the recent House Resolution condemning anti-Semitism and affirming Israelâs right to exist and defend itself, Lovitz called out the âhypocrisyâ of then turning around to offer Hanukkah greetings.
âHappy Hanukkah to our Jewish neighbors in #12thDistrictStrong and beyond. May this be a time of love and community for you and your loved ones,â Tlaib posted in honor of the first night of Hanukkah on Thursday.
âThe definition of the word, âChutzpah!'â Lovitz posted, Â âAs a member of Congress, I voted NO against a resolution condemning antisemitism and recognizing the right of our ally, Israel, to exist. Then, a few days later, wished the same people, Happy Hanukkah. It would be laughable, if youâre [sic] hypocrisy wasnât so disgusting.â
Lovitz was not the only one to take issue with Tlaibâs post.
âI canât imagine a more dishonest tweet than this. Does she even know what the story of Hanukkah is?â Pradheep Shanker asked.
