Stripped of all of its trim, it’s impossible to tell at a glance just which 1963 #Chrysler this is, but the design is so unlike Chryslers before or after that there’s no mistaking it for an other car. The early 60s were a turbulent time for the entire corporation, and the ’63-’64 #Chryslers were engineered in the background of some high-profile trouble. - That trouble started with the glorious but trouble prone ‘57s and the ’58 Recession. But things really went off the rails when Chrysler’s new President, William C. Newberg, attended a party in the Detroit suburbs where he overheard GM chief engineer Ed Cole talking about a “downsized” Chevrolet. Without further investigation, Newberg ordered a crash downsizing of the ’62 Dodges and Plymouths, to disastrous sales results. - In fact, Cole had been talking about the Chevy II (later Nova). Chief stylist Virgil Exner, whose designs had gotten profoundly weird with the 1960//61 models, strongly protested the downsizing - calling the cars “Plucked Chickens.”  - Newberg was ousted after just 64 days on the job thanks to a conflict-of-interest scandal. And his predecessor Tex Colbert briefly returned. He told Exner he wouldn’t be blamed for the ’62s, but Colbert’s replacement, Lynn Townsend, essentially fired Exner in November of 1961 (he was kept on as a consultant), replacing him with Elwood Engel from Ford. - By then ’63 Chryslers were basically done, and Engel didn’t much change them. They were very clean compared to Exner’s ’60-’62 cars, and bereft of fins. Most of the design sprang from a sketch by designer John Samsen for a possible ’63 Imperial, while some themes had been cooking earlier. Eventually they were distilled into new Chrysler/DeSoto bodies (the proposed ’62 DeSoto was a bit different); but DeSoto’s cancellation and the subsequent battle of the ‘62s pushed new Chryslers into 1963 and Imperials into ’64. - Stranger still was that the cars were not new underneath - and the ’62 Chrysler body continued on the ’63 Dodge Custom 880. Strange days.
