Friday, December 17: UFO, âHot Nâ Readyâ
R.I.P. Pete Way (1950-2020), Paul Raymond (1945-2019)
For a few golden years, UFO opened their concerts with the rowdy charge of âHot Nâ Readyâ, and it was such an awesome kickoff that the band stuck with it for a little while after Michael Schenker left. Â The track captured UFOâs sozzled alchemy in full, with Schenkerâs elegant lead giving way to a barroom stomper of a riff, while Phil Mogg goaded and swaggered with a grit and confidence that almost convinced everyone he was a bigger star than he actually was. Â Pete Wayâs insistent bass thump grounded the proceedings, leaving Andy Parker to swing with greater flexibility and finesse than he was usually given credit for (including by this listener). Â âHot Nâ Readyâ was the sort of no-frills fun hard rocker that made the late â70s a reference point to so many future megastars, embodying the guts of that era and holding up far better than anyone mightâve expected.
Today is the 35th year anniversary of the release of VINNIE VINCENT Invasion's debut self-titled album. What do you think of it? Overhyped? Disappointing? A great album?

Oh Mickey, you're so fine You're so fine, you blow my mind Hey Mickey, hey Mickey Oh Mickey, you're so fine You're so fine, you blow my mind Hey Mickey, hey Mickey
Oh Mickey, you're so fine You're so fine, you blow my mind Hey Mickey, hey Mickey Oh Mickey, you're so fine You're so fine, you blow my mind Hey Mickey
Hey Mickey You've been around all night and that's a little long You think you've got the right but I think you've got it wrong Why can't you say goodnight? So you can take me home, Mickey
'Cause when you say you will, it always means you won't You're givin' me the chills, baby, please baby don't Every night you still leave me all alone, Mickey
Oh Mickey, what a pity, you don't understand You take me by the heart when you take me by the hand Oh Mickey, you're so pretty, can't you understand? It's guys like you, Mickey Ooh what you do Mickey, do Mickey Don't break my heart, Mickey
Hey Mickey Now when you take me by the, who's ever gonna know Every time you move, I let a little more show There's something you can use, so don't say no, Mickey
So come on and give it to me anyway you can Anyway you want to do it, I'll take it like a man Oh please baby, please don't leave me in this jam Mickey
Oh Mickey, what a pity, you don't understand You take me by the heart when you take me by the hand Oh Mickey, you're so pretty, can't you understand? It's guys like you, Mickey Ooh what you do Mickey, do Mickey Don't break my heart, Mickey

Monday, September 13: Armored Saint, âRaising Fearâ
R.I.P. David Prichard (1963-1990)
Raising Fearâs title track epitomized the paradox that was Armored Saint in the late â80s: it was faster, heavier, more intense and more sharply written than most of the bandâs previous material, but there also a strange sense of panic and hysteria matched with a bizarre high-strung self-consciousness. Â To be sure, their label had more or less given up on them by 1987, and their inability to gain traction had to have wore them down. Â But while âRaising Fearâ was a fun headbanger with a shoutalong chorus and coda, and John Bushâs roar was never less than compelling, the band as a whole didnât sound confident that all of this would actually amount to anything, and that feeling came through on the finished product. Armored Saint was always a bit too uptight for their own good, and that definitely contributed to their lack of commercial success, though in their better moments they were able to cut through that, and while âRaising Fearâ didnât fully break out of their self-imposed constraints, it came pretty close.
