Thought I’d take a crack at wax-chroming my Bio Megaraptor in between custom projects and it worked a treat. Way more effective at getting colour into the soft plastic vs traditional pot paints. (which can be used over the top)
The soft plastic armour seems to soak up polishing wax like a sponge and does wonders for stopping any cracking or splitting caused by dryness, humidity or light.
You can use plain car wax or powdered pigment waxes on the bio zoid kits along with a soft cloth to buff the wax in.
So I wanted to make a post about this new (as in I only just knew about it) product I decided to experiment with on model kits and found it to be very economical, sturdy and easy to use!
I know a few people following this blog have asked about non-vacuum mild chrome effects and I’d highly recommend this as a great way to add some razzle dazzle to your model kits without needing much in the way of extra materials.
Rub n’ Buff is a carnauba based wax (aka the stuff you use to polish boots and cars!) that has metallic pigments and powders. It is safe to use (but please don’t eat it) and gives a luster that’s hard to beat; see the above photos. A small dab of wax will cover several kit pieces; so a small tube will last a good while.
All that’s required is a soft bristle brush (I use makeup ones), a cloth to buff the wax and optionally: a sealer.
Lightly in gentle circles, brush on a wax, smooth it on until it’s a consistency you like. Then simply rub with a dry, soft cloth until it’s the shine you want. I’ve only used one coat on the plastic as shown, but it can be layered and painted over. (Excess friction will rub it off but it’s easy to reapply)
Doesn’t require priming or undercoat.
4th image is the wax unbuffed, the gif is after a quick buff with the cloth.
Once it’s sat for a while, it won’t smudge with regular handling and can be stripped off with mineral spirits or thinner.
The colour I used is Silver Leaf but it comes in a range of 15 colours and will work on most surfaces including wood, metal, fibreglass and plastics.
You can buy a sampler pack here: Rub N Buff Wax Metallic Finishes 12 Color Sampler Set https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003DKZE5A/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Kc0CybKWMJGKC
It’s also readily available on eBay and most art stores globally.
It’s similar to gold leaf, but cheaper and much, much easier to use!
I hope this helps!
