What did the Reformation theologians mean by this term total depravity? Perhaps we can best answer by stating what this term does not mean. It does not mean “absolute depravity.” This latter term means that one expressed the evil of his sin nature as much as possible at all times. “Total depravity,” furthermore, does not mean that man is incapable of human good. We all know that the most wicked of mankind have some human good about them, just as the finest among mankind have some bad about them. Total depravity, according to the giants of the Protestant Reformation (such as Luther, Calvin, and Knox), meant that man was as bad off as man could be. It meant that man was born into the world “dead in trespasses and sins” and, therefore, fully loyal to Satan. Total depravity means that man in his natural state is incapable of doing anything or desiring anything pleasing to God. Until he is “born again” of the Holy Spirit and given a living human spirit, man is a slave of Satan (“the Prince of the power of the air”) who drives man to fulfill the desires of the flesh that are in enmity with God. When the time comes that those bonds are broken and death replaced by eternal life, it is the work of God who, alone, gives the faith that desires and does those things pleasing to Him.
