It's time for songs and their Aesthetics. Episode 17
This week, I'm excited to say that this is the first double-feature SATA episode
This week's songs are "Passenger Seat" and "When We Drive By," by the Indie band Death Cab for Cutie from Bellingham, Washington. These two songs are beautiful. Dreamy, a little somber. These two songs, similar in story, are from two different albums. "Passenger Seat" is from the band's fourth album, "Transatlanticism", from 2003, while " When We Drive" is from " Thank You For Today " from 2018
Let's dive in, shall we
Surprise! It's a double feature for this episode of songs and their aesthetics, and what better band than Death Cab? I've been listening to this band for a while. I first heard the album "Plans," and that was my gateway, which eventually led me to listen to More of their discography. Then, as I got older, I heard songs from the album "Transatlantism," which to me was an album I didn't listen to much of until I heard passenger seat for the first time, and it hit me hard that song, it's a song about a memory of being there for someone or someone being there for you. It was a very beautiful song and a beautiful yet sad album, and now that I own Transatlantism as a CD, the entire album is just a masterpiece. I highly recommend that album, but there's a reason why I wanted to make this week's blog a double feature. Last thought I listened to thank you for it today for the first time (it took me so long because at first I wasn't really interested in the album. I was more interested the older stuff but I wanted to try listening to the newer stuff) and one song that really stood out for me is when we drive, which I found out is a sister song to passenger seat with its synths and '80s feel when we drive is an amazing beautiful song and it's my personal favorite from thank you for today. Both songs have frontman Ben Gibbard's poetic vocals, and even though when we drive has a newer, dreamier Vibe it's one of the newer Death Cab songs from the 2010s and 2020s that carry that Legacy of the older albums. With passenger seats piano driven Melody, and when we drive's dreamy feel, they both have the same message, and these amazing stories of songs give off the Aesthetics of stargazing, night drives, static storms And embrace.
