the chorweiler estate does not consist of large blocks, as most people might think, but of smaller house structures at the edges, which were designed in a representative manner, especially at the entrances, and are surrounded by green areas.

die siedlung chorweiler besteht nicht  wie die meisten denken mögen nur aus großwohnblöcken sondern an ihren rändern aus kleineren hausstrukturen die vor allem in den eingängen repräsentativ gestaltet wurden und von grünanlagen umgeben sind.

Gottfried Böhm

«Gottfried Böhm’s project in Chorweiler comprising 200 apartments was completed in 1974. It was much more ambitious than customary low-cost housing projects, but exceeded the scheduled budget. Böhm created a spatial unity of square and street, intimate outdoor spaces enclosed by buildings and without cars. (...) [He seeks the deliberate creation of the space] Böhm gears his architecture towards people (...) who walk rather than use cars. He creates an interesting terrain that rises or falls, he creates road space enclosed on both sides, plazas, passages and transitions. He offers constantly changing perspectives to people moving on foot. In larger areas he totally excludes road traffic in the process opening up buildings directly to the street space – an effective trick, which at first sight is hardly noticeable.» by Gabriele Wiesemann.
