Three rings for the elven kings under the sky! Wrought of star-fire!
For Textile Tuesday!
The Chintamani design is known for repeated patterns of three circles grouped in a triangle with two wavy lines. Very popular in Ottoman Turkey, the motif likely came from China as a Buddhist emblem of the three pearls of wisdom.
In the Ottoman context, this emblem was associated with good luck and power and was used in the garments of the elite.

Chintamani Lokeshvara Jeweled plaque
Jeweled plaque, 80.0 x 67.5.0 cm Nepal, 19th century CE Gift of Smt. Sulochana S. Nanavati, CSMVS, Acc. no. 2003.2
The Sanskrit word Chintamani means 'wish-granting-jewel'. Brilliantly created with copper alloy and semi-precious stones. This 100+ year old profusely embellished panel is one-of-its-kind in the collection of the Museum. In the center of the panel is the figure of Chintamani Lokeshvara, sculpted in crystal that with every movement of the visitor, comes alive due to the play of light.
One hand of the wish-granting deity is in a gesture offering refuge, and the other one holds a branch of a fabulous tree bearing jewels as its fruits. Propitiated in household shrines, such panels fulfilled physical and spiritual desires of devotees.
Curators' wish that this object be displayed in all its flamboyance was fulfilled after the conservators and restorers painstakingly removed a century of grime and tarnish from the intricate metal decorations and mounted it for display at the Himalayan Art Gallery at CSMVS. 'This object was conserved under the aegis of ConservArte: Citi-CSMVS Art Conservation Project'
