Martial Arts Street Performers, Shanghai, probably late Qing or early Chinese Republic.
Qing New Army Presents Arms. Note the European Style Saber the officer carries.
A recently acquired, very late Qing New Army Saber. I can here my students syaing, "ah, Laoshi, that's a European military saber." And they would be correct, but it is one that was carried by Qing troops toward the very end of the dynasty. The three bar hilt is quite substantial, but the blade is lighter than other examples I have handled.
This saber is 36 1/2" overall with a blade length of 31” with a Point of Balance 4 1/2” from the guard and weighs 1 lb 7 oz. For comparison, this is lighter than the lightest jian, which are no lighter than 1 lb 10 oz. But that would be quite a light jian. A typical jian weighs between 1 lb 12 ox to 2 lbs.
