What Is “Pinyin” in the Chinese Language?
Pinyin is the romanization writing system developed in the 1950s to help teach the Chinese language to overseas students. Chinese for beginners will be introduced to pinyin to enable them to speak Chinese while still learning how to write Chinese characters. In the beginner level textbooks, pinyin is usually written alongside the Chinese characters. Although pinyin uses Latin alphabet, just like foreign languages that are Latin based, it has its own unique pronunciation. Tone marks are also written on top of the vowels to help with pronunciation, as contrasted by absence of tone marks in the Chinese characters.
