Chimneys pass straight through the roofline, so when water shows up near a fireplace, it's not always obvious whether it's a roof problem, a chimney problem, or both. As we tell our customers all the time: chimney leaks are not always easy to diagnose from the ground.
The most common culprits after heavy rain: a missing or damaged chimney cap, a cracked crown, deteriorated mortar, failed flashing, a rusted chase cover, or masonry that was never properly waterproofed.
