Summary: Between Mankai and the Organization, Chikage struggles to balance both his lives as he prepares for his lead part in the Mixed Play Performance of āClose to the Sunā.
A rated-T fake event with Chikage as lead and Sakyo as co-lead with supporting cast Sakuya, Itaru, Juza, and Azami. The structure of this fic is based around how event play translations look, so it is purely dialogue (with pictures!). The only ship is Chikage/Sakyo.
Sakyo: ?
(Is that Utsuki on the balcony?)
~
Sakyo: So you were here.
Chikage: Sakyo-san.
Sakyo: Itās odd to see you on the balcony alone in the middle of the day. Thought youād only be here at night.
Chikage: I guess you could call it rolebuilding.
Sakyo: Ah. Because youāre from the Land of Sol.
Chikage: And youāre from the Land of Stratus. You should try stargazing one night. Itās fun.
Sakyo: The point is that we canāt see the stars, Utsuki.
Chikage: Haha, I guess youāre right.
Sakyo: ā¦
Chikage: (It seems the conversation isnāt over. Heās hovering still.)
Sakyo: ā¦
Chikage: I feel like you wish to ask me something.
Sakyo: Donāt stay out too late, Utsuki. Itās cold tonight.
Chikage: Of course.
*door closes*
Chikage: *sigh* Perhaps Iām biting off more than I can chew at the moment.
~
Sakyo: āOdd that you never have though.ā
Chikage: āSo youāve never seen the moon and stars then? Thatās a shame. Theyāre beautiful.ā
Sakyo: āOf course a Solarian would say such a thing.ā
Izumi: (Chikage-san and Sakyo-san are the leads for this mixed play.)
(Chikage-san plays Solaris who is scouted by Sakyo-sanās character, Haar, to help cure his son.)
Chikage: āMy my, how judgmental.ā
āYou should stay tonight to see them then. Iād like to show them to you.ā
Sakyo: āYou and your people have been tainted by the sun.ā
Chikage: āIs that really so bad?ā
Izumi: Ah, Chikage-san, could you sound a little lessā¦
Chikage: Less?
Izumi: Hollow.
Chikage: āIs that really so bad?ā
Izumi: Not quite. Can you try sounding more prideful?
Chikage: āIs that really so bad?ā
Izumi: ...
Chikage: āIs that really so bad?ā
Izumi: Solaris knows a lot about the sky, like you, can you tap into that kinda mindset a bit more?
Chikage: I can try.
āIs that really so bad?ā
Izumi: Hmm, something still sounds⦠off. Are you feelā
*door opens*
Matsukawa: Director! I have something to speak with you about!
Izumi: Matsukawa, weāre still practicingā
Chikage: Actually, letās end here, if you donāt mind, I have some work to finish before the end of today.
Izumi: Oh, okay. Good work then, Chikage-san.
*door closes*
Izumi: (I hope heās okayā¦)
Sakyo: ā¦
Itaru: Hidden quest: unlocked.
Sakyo: Oi, donāt play games.
Itaru: Wasnāt playing one RN.
But, speaking of games, Banri and I have a raid to prepare for, now that practice is over. Otsu~
*door closes*
Juza: Sakuya, if you donāt mind, Iād like to go over a scene with you.
Sakuya: Sure! Letās practice in the courtyard!
Azami: I need to talk to Yuki about makeup and costumes, so Iāll go too.
*door closes*
Matsukawa: And then there were three~
Izumi: Ahahaā¦
Anyway, you had something you wanted to say to me, Matsukawa?
Matsukawa: Ah right, soā
Sakyo: ā¦
(Utsuki⦠Work, huh.)
~
Chikage: ā¦
ā¦
You know you canāt sneak up on me.
Hisoka: ā¦
Chikage: Do you need something?
Hisoka: Where are you going?
Chikage: Nowhere you need to concern yourself with.
Hisoka: ā¦
Chikage: *sigh* Iāll be fine.
Hisoka: ā¦
Chikage: Iāll be back before Tasuku even gets up for his daily runs.
*door opens*
Hisoka: Chikage.
Chikage: ā¦
Chikage: Thisā¦
Hisoka: Give it back when you come home.
Chikage: What, are you stealing my past habits now?
Hisoka: ā¦
Chikage: *sigh* Fine. Iāll give it back if I donāt lose it.

idk why but i keep thinking of chikage/sakyo as a potential ship. like the potential chaos of spy/yakuza in a way that hisoka/sakyo doesn't even have. i lowkey wanna see it
There's the sound of a breath hitching when Chikage cups his hands over the sides of Sakyo's face. They don't know which one of them it was, but both of them have shallowed their breathes, Chikage's breath shakier than Sakyo's.
"Can I...Can I kiss you?" Chikage asks, because he needs the extra push. He needs and wants to be reassured what he's doing is okay and safe. Sakyo's lips press together tightly for a moment before opening.
"It's just a kiss, Utsuki. You can...You can kiss me as much as you like. Only when the kids aren't around though," Sakyo tacks on the last bit, and Chikage laughs, the tight coil in his stomach loosening up just a bit. Sakyo always managed to calm him in the oddest ways, whether the other knew it or not.
"Okay. Thank you." Sakyo doesn't have much time to question the thanks before Chikage moves. He slides off Sakyo's glasses gently, and his lips become eye level with Sakyo. Sakyo barely has enough time to comprehend what's happening before the slightest pressure is applied just below his left eye.
They don't comment on Chikage's hands shaking around Sakyo's face, but Sakyo does slide his own hands over Chikage's. Next time, Sakyo will kiss Chikage's throat, between the collarbones and slightly down, where the phantom touch of a vial filled with poison will be replaced with the soft cold of a lover's lips.

Izumi: (Phew! That was a lot of work at that troupe, but Iām glad we could get it done today.)
(They have amazing potential and I canāt wait to see what they do next!)
(Maybe I should take some of the others to see the play.)
(Hm? Isnāt thatā)
Sakyo-san!
Sakyo: ?
Why are you running? Youāre probably already exhausted from working today. Slow down.
Izumi: Sorry, I just wanted to catch up with you.
Where are you heading?
Sakyo: Back to the dorms, actually.
Izumi: Oh, did you just come from something?
Sakyo: I did.
Izumi: What was it?
Sakyo: Nosy, as always.
It was an errand for the family.
Izumi: (He must be talking about Ginsenkai.)
Sakyo: Were you heading back too?
Izumi: Yeah! ⦠Well. I was, but then I remembered that I need to do some shopping, sooooā¦
Sakyo: *sigh* Iāll help out.
Izumi: Yes! Itāll be quick! I promise!
Sakyo: Well, I donāt mind it.
~
Izumi: (Okay⦠So, we have this this and this now⦠I donāt think we need that, butā¦)
(Hmm, maybe we can get this just in caseā¦)
Sakyo-san! Do you thinkā
Izumi: (Huh? He looks like heās thinking hard about something.)
(Wait, heās⦠Heās staring at something, actually.)
(Is that)
Sakyo-san? ⦠Sakyo-san!
Sakyo: !
Sorry⦠I suppose I spaced out.
Izumi: Really? Couldnāt tell.
Sakyo: Whatās with the sass?
Izumi: ā¦
Youāre thinking about him, arenāt you? Itās bothering you too.
Sakyo: ā¦
Izumi: Have you talked to him yet?
Sakyo: ⦠No.
This is different. Heās not like the others. You donāt justā¦
Heās just different.
Izumi: (I know Sakyo-sanās always been suspicious of Chikage-san, but I donāt think heās figured out the extent of what he does.)
(Chikage-sanās always done well in hiding the specifics of what he does from the others, but that doesnāt stop them from speculating.)
(Except⦠Chikage-sanās changed so much over the years, itās odd to remember April and Chikage are the same person.)
(Mankaiās accepted Chikage-san as their family and Iām sure itās the same for Sakyo-san.)
(Sakyo-sanās probably worried that he canāt support him because he doesnāt know how.)
(But also⦠heās avoiding a lot more than that.)
(They both areā¦)
I donāt think he is.
Sakyo: Pardon?
Izumi: I donāt think Chikage-sanās that different.
Sakyo: Hmph. Then, how would you go about supporting someone as dishonest as him?
Izumi: Youāre not giving him enough credit.
Itās true heās not really the most open, but that doesnāt mean everything he does isnāt genuine.
Whatās that phrase? āActions speak louder than wordsā?
Honestly, I think itās even more fitting since weāre a theatre troupe.
Sakyo: ā¦
Izumi: Talk to him, yeah? You wonāt know if you can support him or not if you donāt say anything.
Sakyo: ā¦
I thought we were shopping.
Izumi: Or you can avoid the subject altogether. That works too.
(He says that, but heās not moving.)
Sakyo: Thank you. Director.
I think Iāll take your advice.
~
Chikage: ā¦
ā¦
āIs that really so bad?ā
Chikage: ⦠No, thatās⦠āIs that reallyā¦ā *sigh*
(Why does it never sound right?)
*door opens*
Sakyo: Odd to see you practicing in front of the dorms when itās nearly midnight.
⦠Even more so when it looks like youāre heading somewhere.
Chikage: Actually, I was going to head back in sooā
Sakyo: Cut the crap, Utsuki. Just this once.
Chikage: Iām not sure what you mean.
Sakyo: Be honest with me. Where are you going?
Chikage: I just said inside.
Sakyo: Then, walk in right now, and Iāll stay right here until you do.
Chikage: Why?
Sakyo: So you can prove youāre not lying to me.
Chikage: Where would I go at midnight, Sakyo-san?
Sakyo: ā¦
Chikage: (Heās staring at me⦠As if the answerās clear as day.)
Sakyo: When I joined Mankai, I promised myself one thing. Donāt involve anyone in Ginsenkaiās affairs.
But then Bon decided to cause a ruckus.
Chikage: You sound relieved though.
Sakyo: ⦠I am. Mankai helped me make amends with Bon, even if I didnāt want the help, but Iām grateful to them.
I still donāt want to cause Mankai trouble, but sometimes⦠sometimes, I can ask them for a helping hand.
Chikage: (I donāt like what heās implying.)
Chikage: Iām happy for you, Sakyo-san, but Iām afraid I donāt know what your point is.
Sakyo: Let me help you, Utsuki.
Chikage: With my lines?
Sakyo: Utsuki.
Chikage: ā¦
(Thereās no escape, huh.)
*sigh* You canāt help me.
Sakyo: Youāre not giving me the chance.
Chikage: No, really, you canāt help me. I canāt involve anyone.
Sakyo: Iām not just anyoneā
Chikage: Sakyo-san!
(No. Donāt yell.)
You know better than anyone else that I⦠I canāt. I canāt take the risk.
I donāt have a choice in this, Sakyo-san.
Sakyo: Youāre assuming too much.
Chikage: Huh
Sakyo: When are you coming back? What time?
Chikage: Sakyo-san, I canātā
Sakyo: Just give me a damn time, Utsuki.
Chikage: ⦠Four AM. Hopefully.
Sakyo: Then, Iāll wait for you at four.
Chikage: Why?
Sakyo: Because if youāre even a second late, Iāll kick your ass.
Chikage: I⦠I donāt understand.
Sakyo: *sigh* I think you know the feeling.
When you get back from something and you get that⦠that feeling of⦠of reliefā¦
Of someone being there to greet you at the door and sayā¦
āWelcome homeā.
Chikage: (His eyes are downcast, like heās remembering something.)
(But heās right, I do know what itās like⦠That guy used to do it all the timeā¦)
Chikage: You donāt have to do that for me.
Sakyo: Youāre right. I donāt have to. But I want to.
Chikage: Well, isnāt that cliche. Youāre treating this as if weāre lovers.
Sakyo: Could you drop your defense mechanism for a moment?
Chikage: ā¦
Sakyo: You need a reminder, Utsuki.
Chikage: A reminder of what?
Sakyo: Of the family youāre coming home to. Of the family that cares about you.
The family who worries about your wellbeing and doesn't want to see you get hurt.
Chikage: (Heās probably referring to Itaru and Iās fight⦠It was a fight, wasnāt it?)
Sakyo: All of us. Weāre your family.
Chikage: ā¦
Sakyo: And Iāll do my part to support you. Not just as your co-lead. But as someone part of your family.
And I will admit, I donāt want you to go. But like you said, I know better than anyone else that you canāt take that risk.
So Iāll let you go. But, Iāll be here the moment you get back, soā¦
Please come back.
Chikage: ⦠I will. I promiseā¦
Chikage: Believe in me, yeah Sakyo-san? I promise Iāll come back.
Sakyo: You better.
Chikage: (But please stop here, Sakyo-san. Youāll only get hurt if you get closer.)
