John Marks wasted absolutely no time making NHL history on November 13, 1975. The Chicago Blackhawks forward scored twice within the opening 33 seconds against the Philadelphia Flyers at the Spectrum, setting a new NHL record for the fastest two goals by one player from the start of a game.

Marks scored unassisted just 14 seconds into the game, then struck again 19 seconds later with help from Pit Martin and Cliff Koroll. The previous record had belonged to Bill Hicke of the Oakland Seals, who scored twice in the first 1:33 back in 1969.

Chicago jumped out to a huge 5-1 lead, but the Flyers stormed back behind a four-point night from Gary Dornhoefer. Philadelphia even scored three goals in a span of 50 seconds bridging the second and third periods before the game eventually ended in a wild 5-5 tie.

Years later, Mike Knuble of the Boston Bruins broke the record with two goals in the opening 27 seconds of a 2003 game against Florida. Still, Marks’ explosive start remains one of the most shocking openings in NHL history.

Stan Mikita didn’t just win a playoff game in 1975, he unknowingly closed the door on Chicago’s postseason success for nearly five years.

His overtime winner against the Buffalo Sabres on April 17, 1975, would stand as the Blackhawks’ final playoff victory before an NHL-record 16-game losing streak.

The wild part? Chicago still made the playoffs every year during that stretch… they just couldn’t win.

It wasn’t until 1980 that the streak finally snapped, after Mikita had hung up his skates.

The 1960-61 Chicago Blackhawks didn’t overwhelm teams with offense.

They didn’t lead the league in scoring. They didn’t rack up hat tricks.

In fact, across an entire season that saw 21 hat tricks league-wide… Chicago had just one.

And yet, they won the Stanley Cup.

That lone explosion came early.

📍 October 9, 1960: Chicago Stadium

A young, electrifying Bobby Hull took over the game.

He scored all three goals in a 3–2 win over the New York Rangers, unleashing 13 shots on Gump Worsley and single-handedly powering the Hawks to victory.

Hull opened the scoring late in the first on the power play, just seconds before a Rangers penalty expired.

New York pushed back, taking a 2–1 lead into the third.

But the final period?

All Hull.

Twice, the Rangers were on the verge of killing penalties. Twice, Hull made them pay.

And he didn’t stop there.

In the very next game, a 3–0 win over Toronto, Hull was in on every goal:

January 30, 1969, was a nightmare night for the Philadelphia Flyers.

After Chicago’s Dennis Hull took an early penalty, things somehow got worse for Philly. Stan Mikita scored just 10 seconds into the kill and Chico Maki followed with another shorthanded goal before the penalty even expired.

That was just the beginning.

The Blackhawks went on to score 12 goals on 49 shots, chasing Doug Favell after six goals and lighting up Bernie Parent for six more. Meanwhile, Denis DeJordy stopped 37 shots for the shutout.

Dennis Hull and Pit Martin each had five points, while Jim Pappin recorded a hat trick in one of the most dominant performances of the era.

On October 14, 1981, Boston Bruins rookie Normand Léveillé had a night he would never forget at Chicago Stadium.

The Bruins’ 19th overall pick from the 1981 NHL Entry Draft had been a prolific scorer in junior hockey with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, including a 55-goal season in his final QMJHL campaign. But his first three NHL games to begin the 1981-82 season were quiet, as he was held off the scoresheet.

That changed quickly in his fourth game.

Just 36 seconds into the contest against the Chicago Blackhawks, Léveillé scored his first NHL goal, beating goaltender Murray Bannerman with assists from Terry O’Reilly and Tom Fergus.

He added another late in the second period, scoring at 18:45 on a setup from Brad Park. The goal gave Boston a 6-5 lead and ultimately stood as the game-winner in an 8-5 Bruins victory. Léveillé finished the night with five shots on goal.

Léveillé went on to record 14 goals and 33 points in 66 games as a rookie in 1981-82. He started the following season strong, but tragedy struck when he suffered a career-ending brain aneurysm during a game against the Vancouver Canucks early in the 1982-83 season.

On February 20, 1977, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks turned Chicago Stadium into a scoring carnival. The two teams combined for 18 goals in a wild contest that became one of the highest-scoring games of the NHL’s modern era.

Summerside, PEI native Errol Thompson led the way for Toronto with a huge performance, recording a hat trick and two assists. Thompson set up goals by Lanny McDonald and Darryl Sittler to cap a five-point night.

The third period began with a stunning scoring burst. Pit Martin scored for Chicago at 1:04, Sittler responded just 25 seconds later, Thompson added his 14th goal of the season at 2:07, and Grant Mulvey scored at 2:40. Four goals in just 1:36 created one of the fastest scoring sequences in NHL history.

In goal, Wayne Thomas made 38 saves for Toronto, while Gilles Villemure allowed nine goals on 37 shots for Chicago, with the Leafs adding one more into the empty net. Toronto defenseman Ian Turnbull also had a huge night with a goal and four assists, while Lanny McDonald finished with two goals and two helpers, including the game winner.
