For the armchair explorer, @atlasobscura recommends 'Chernobyl: A Stalker’s Guide,' published by @fuelpublishing "Atlas Obscura tour guide Darmon Richter got unprecedented access to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and documented the people and places of the rarely seen landscape in his book 'Chernobyl: A Stalker’s Guide.' Sadly, the Russian war in Ukraine may have permanently changed the terrain and status of the Zone, making this book a snapshot of a unique moment in Chernobyl’s history." Guess what this is… 🚀 💣 This is a #tinyplanet #360photo Inside the Nuclear Reactor #3, Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, Ukraine, 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Kyiv. Reactor No.3 still has active graphite and is considered extremely dangerous if any missile hits it. Reactor No. 4 was the reactor of the #chernobyl disaster in 1986, and the power plant is now within a large restricted area known as the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The #chernobylexclusionzone was the site of fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces during the recent #battleofchernobyl on 24 February 2022, as part of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russian forces captured the plant the same day. It was reported that artillery shelling hit radioactive waste storage locations and an increase in radioactivity was observed. But lucky, there had been no casualties nor destruction at the industrial site or remaining nuclear reactors. This is ACTIVE wars around Nuclear! We merely avoid another Nuclear Disaster like Chernobyl and this is NOT the end of it. In the early hours of 4 March, the Zaporizhzhia plant in southeastern Ukraine became the first ACTIVE operating civil nuclear power plant to come under armed attack. Fighting between forces overnight resulted in a projectile hitting a training building within the site of the six-unit plant! For your information, #ukraine has 15 operable #nuclear reactors at four plants that generate about half of its electricity. THE WAR IS ONGOING, THE RISK REMAINS HIGH. Nuclear disaster, if unfortunately happened deal to the active war, will affect the whole of Europe, the whole world and the whole humanity. It will impact the global environment, and destroy Mother Nature. It will affect your life no matter where you are located in the world. This is serious! Please help share the message and STOP THE POINTLESS WAR! Special thanks to @virtualmediag Nickolay Omelchenko - a proud #ukrainian google trusted photographer, who decided to stay in Kyiv for the fight - for capturing this 360 immersive HDR photo of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and the Reactor. #nuclearpowerplant #theta360 #360photography #nuclearreactor (at Chernobyl, Ukraine) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca6FiQJrCTd/?utm_medium=tumblr

Even after many years of scientific research and government investigation, there are still many unanswered questions about the Chernobyl accident — especially regarding the long-term health impacts that the massive radiation leak will have on those who were exposed. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is located about 81 miles (130 kilometers) north of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and about 12 miles (20 km) south of the border with Belarus, according to the World Nuclear Association. It is made up of four reactors that were designed and built during the 1970s and 1980s. A human-made reservoir, roughly 8.5 square miles (22 sq. km) in size and fed by the Pripyat river, was created to provide cooling water for the reactor. The city of Pripyat, founded in 1970, was the nearest town to the power plant at just under 2 miles (3 km) away and housed almost 50,000 people in 1986. A smaller and older town, Chernobyl, was about 9 miles (15 km) away and home to about 12,000 residents. #chernobyl #chernobylzone #chernobylexclusionzone #chernobylhbo #apocalypse #abandonedafterdark #coldwar #ghosts #abandoned #ukraine #ghosttown #abandonedworld #techmurari https://www.instagram.com/p/CacNIHXvkOi/?utm_medium=tumblr
