Itās not easy having a detective for a boyfriend, especially when said boyfriend was as reckless and determined to solve a case as they come. Maybe some people wouldnāt worry so much if they had enough faith in their significant other, but Chen had enough reason to spend sleepless nights. Chen, like any rational person, worried if Julien would get caught up in some confrontation with a suspect. Weapons, physical force, fire attacksā¦the list could go on, really, especially for one as paranoid as Chen. So, imagine Chenās horror when he got a call from Julienās coworkers notifying him that Julien was in the hospital.
āJULIEN! āChen came rushing into the hospital room, despite being told to keep calm. āJulien, are you okay? What did they do to you?! Kiki and Korrin said you were here and I came as fast as I could so I- ā
āChenā¦Chen! Calm down!ā Julien sat up carefully in his bed. He could see how panicked Chen was, so he placed a hand on the side of the otherās face. āLook, Iām fine, see? ā
Chen took a moment to gather himself and settle down a bit. Ā āS-sorry, I got carried away thereā¦What happened?ā Chen grabbed the nearby chair and pulled it up to the side of the bed so he could have a seat.
āWell, you knowā¦There was that case with that one Blaziken that had been running illegal trades. We finally got a strong lead as to where their base was. It wasnāt an easy task getting them to comply, even having the perimeter secured. The Blaziken had slipped though, so I pursued them andā¦ā Julien began to trail off, but jumped back in. āWell! What matters is that I was able to apprehend them and got them taken care of. ā
There was a moment of silence of Chen just staring at Julien. Julien continued to keep a smile on his face, while Chenā¦knew something was up. He narrowed his eyes at his boyfriend before speaking up again.
āIf that really was all that happened, you wouldnāt have wound up here in the first placeā¦ā He leaned in closer. āWhat did they do to you, Julienā¦ā
Julien let out a sigh. He was naĆÆve to think he could sneak this past Chen. Ā Of course heād ask about why he was in the hospital. Maybe he couldāve gotten away with it had his peers not notified Chen, butā¦that kind of thinking may have been a little unfair to Kiki and Korrin. Ā He was sure that they just wanted to make sure heād be in good company, as they had to take care of the rest of the work at the station.
āJustā¦donāt freak out, okay?ā Julien pushed away the blankets, just enough for him to lift up his hospital gown to reveal the side of his torso bandaged up. āAs careful as I was, he got me right with a fire punch. Guess you could say I really was in hot pursuit of the criminalā¦hahaā¦ā Julienās attempt to lighten the mood didnāt exactly work, and Chenās expression said it all. āDonāt worry about it too much, though. The nice Audino nurse patched me up nicely, so it doesnāt hurt as much as earlier- ā
āJulienā¦why didnāt you wait for back up? I know how long it took you to find this person, b-but to take such risks like going after them on your ownā¦You could have died.ā Chen couldnāt hold it anymore, and all the worry he had came pouring out as he began to tear up.
As much as Julien wanted to object and say how absurd that claim was, he couldnāt deny that Chen had a point. Sometimes heād get ahead of himself, putting the importance of the case ahead of his own safety.
āIāmā¦sorry, Chen. I know how worried you must have been.ā Julien brought a hand up to Chenās face, wiped away his tears, and pulled him into a hug.
Chen couldnāt help but pout a little. āOf course, I was worried! Iām worried even when you just go out shopping because who knows if youāll go out of your way to help some stranger! What if that stranger turned out to be some serial killer?!ā
Julien couldnāt help but stifle a laugh, knowing that itād hurt Chenās feelings even more if he heard. āChen thatās notā¦Cāmon, that wouldnāt happen.ā He rubbed Chenās back reassuringly. āListen, theyāre allowing me to take some time off work while I heal. How about we go back and spend some time back at your place?ā

And with that, Chen wiggled his way out of Julienās embrace and slinked into the shadows. The visit had ended on a positive note, but they had yet to realize what was to come when they made their way back to the manor. Needless to say, this wouldnāt be the last encounter Julien had with fire.
