' choose, and choose wisely. or others shall choose for you. '

"I'm done letting other people make decisions for me." The words came out harsher than he'd intended, maybe the first true thing he'd said since he left his hometown, scarred and still healing but finally free. Smith prided himself on never letting anyone see what he didn't want them to, his entire existence a carefully crafted persona to achieve whatever ends he'd set for himself.
But he didn't have a plan now. The plan had run out the moment he found himself trapped in a burning building. He hadn't set that fire--he wasn't that careless--but he'd certainly set things in motion and then found he could only control them to a point. For example, half-burning himself alive had not been part of the plan. Otherwise, it had gone off relatively well.
So why did he feel driftless now? He had his freedom. He'd punished his abusers. He should be happy, exhilarated. Instead, he'd wandered aimlessly into this town and then into this restaurant, for once not knowing what he wanted or where he was going next. "I'll take a cup of coffee," he muttered, shoving a couple wrinkled bills onto the counter in case she doubted whether he had the money. He probably looked exactly as homeless as he was.
